A bill that required college students to be vaccinated against meningitis was signed by Governor Rick Perry Friday and has become law immediately.

Senate Bill 1107 was filed by State Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth) and sponsored by State Rep. Charlie Howard (R-Sugar Land).

The bill was one of many introduced after the death of Texas A&M student Nicolis Williams. He was a student, living off-campus, when he contracted bacterial meningitis and later died. When Williams entered Texas A&M, law only required those students who were living on-campus to receive the meningitis vaccine.

The governor signed the bill into law on Friday. Since the bill passed with such a majority in both the house and the senate, it became effective immediately with the governor's signature.
