Brick, Mooney Earn CS Council Seats

Updated: Sun 1:19 PM, May 15, 2011

Two of the three contested seats for the College Station city council were decided on Election Night. One will need a runoff to fill it.

Julie Schultz came up just 10 votes shy of getting a majority of the votes needed to win the Place 5 seat outright. As a result, she will go to a runoff against Sherry Ellison, who earned 26 percent of the votes. Hal Hawkins (22 percent) and Danyal Shaikh (less than one percent) rounded out the group.

In Place 5, 5,552 votes were cast.

A runoff will be determined at a later date, but will in all likelihood will take place in June.

The races to fill Places 1 and 3 on the council were landslide victories. Blanche Brick, who failed in her attempt to win the Republican nomination for Texas House last year, easily defeated Shawn Rhodes to earn Place 1. Brick earned 67 percent of the votes.

Karl Mooney scored an easy win over Arthur Pinto for Place 3. Mooney won nearly 70 percent of the votes.

Election Night spelled a major defeat for members of the so-called conservative block of candidates -- Rhodes, Pinto and Hawkins -- all of whom had earned the support of Place 5 representative Jana McMillan, who chose not to run for re-election after just seven months on the council.

McMillan had backed the recall of three of the other sitting councilmembers: Mayor Nancy Berry and Councilmembers Katy-Marie Lyles and Dave Ruesink. Voters overwhelmingly rejected the recall efforts by a nearly three-to-one margin.

Place 1's John Crompton could not run for re-election due to term limits. Place 3's Dennis Maloney chose not to run for a second term.

Besides Brick, none of the other candidates for the three contested seats had ever run for political office.
