The majority of Bryan voters say they want their municipal golf course to stay right where it is.

Tuesday, 72 percent of voters said no to a proposition which would have authorized the city to redesignate the property where the Travis B. Bryan Municipal Golf Course sits. City officials said there was interest from many commercial ventures to locate on the property, located on Villa Maria between South College and Finfeather.

"Voters and the citizens of Bryan are the winners tonight," Bryan Mayor Jason Bienski said. "Everyone exercised their right to vote and their voices were heard. I think that's important. That's why the city council wanted to put this on the ballot."

Because that proposition failed, a second, non-binding referendum was not counted. In that vote, 65 percent of voters were against buying Briarcrest Country Club.

Had the second proposition been counted and passed, a $2 million deal had been agreed to between the club's owners and the city.
