Drawn Out: Bryan Councilmember Will Lose Seat Due to Redistricting

Updated: Mon 10:49 AM, Jul 09, 2012

Bryan City Councilmember Chuck Konderla will have to give up his seat due to new district lines going into effect July 21.

Konderla, who won a three-year term for Single Member District 3 in 2010, moved to a new home in October in preparation for the birth of his fifth child. However, with the new Census information, Bryan's district lines have shifted, and that new home will be in SMD4.

At Tuesday's city council meeting, a special election for SMD3 will be added to the November ballot to go along with regular elections for SMD5 and the at-large seat.

Konderla says, by law, since July 21 falls within 120 days of the special election, he can hold his seat until the new office holder is determined.

SMD4, held by Ann Horton since 2007, is not up for election until 2013. She will not be eligible to run again due to a limit of two terms.

Councilmember Mike Southerland is term-limited and cannot run for re-election for the at-large position he's held since 2006.

Konderla, a local jewelry store owner, tells News 3 he will comment on his political future, if any, in the coming days.
