WASHINGTON (AP) - There's still no deal to keep the government
running.
After meeting late last night and again today, President Barack
Obama hasn't been able to work out an agreement with House Speaker
John Boehner.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who's also been in the
meetings, says there will be another one later today. And Boehner
told reporters outside the White House that "all of us sincerely
believe that we can get to an agreement."
Boehner said he asked Obama to sign the measure the House passed this afternoon that would fund the government for one more week.
After today's meeting, Boehner said, "There is no agreement on
a number, there's no agreement on the policy issues."

President Obama and congressional leaders worked late into Wednesday night trying to work out a deal to keep the government from shutting down midnight Friday.

It's not often the President comes to the White House House briefing room at 11:00 at night, but with time running out to avoid a shutdown Obama was upping the pressure.

After 90 minutes of Oval office negotiations there was still no deal.

Top leaders from both parties then made a rare appearance together, vowing to keep talking.

More than 4 million federal employees are in jeopardy of losing their pay if the government is forced to shutdown.

The impact of a shutdown will be felt across the nation.

Government backing of small business loans would come to a halt.

National Parks will shut their gates and customs officers will be furloughed.

Essential government workers will stay on the job no matter what including air traffic controllers, the FBI and the U.S. military.

House Republicans are threatening to pass a stop gap spending bill that would keep the government open for another week, but President Obama has already promised to veto it.
