DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Blinn College’s dance and cheer teams each placed second at the National Cheerleaders Association / National Dance Alliance Collegiate Cheer & Dance Championships this weekend.
Their second-place finishes matched the best national championship performances in each team’s history.
The cheer team scored 92.92 points, finishing just behind national champion Valdosta (Ga.) State’s 93.38.
Blinn placed fourth in preliminaries to earn one of the six finals berths, then performed even better in the finals.
“They made a few mistakes in prelims but they pulled it together on the second day,” said head cheer and dance coach Sarah Barland. “They had a little fire in them to want to do better than fourth place.”
The dance team finished second with 9.263 points to finish just behind Ramapo, a four-year college out of New Jersey that has now won back-to-back national titles. Ramapo scored 9.425 points.
Blinn placed first in the preliminaries.
“They were the best I’ve ever seen them in the prelims,” Barland said. “In the finals, we were dancing in 11 mph winds.”
Blinn dance was recognized for having the most innovative choreography in the competition, the first time the program has received that honor. The team also placed second in the nation at last year’s competition.
