Blinn College To Consider Multiple Properties For New Brazos County Campus

BRYAN - Blinn College is starting a new search for a new second campus location in Brazos County after trustees voted to terminate a contract to buy the Lynntech Incorporated building on Highway 6 in College Station.

The board had been looking to buy the nearly 54 acres of property.

"The decision last night was really based on the needs of the institution we looked all of our options we had heard from the neighborhoods," said Sylvia McMullen, Blinn's Brazos County Campuses President.

She tells us the main reason for the change of course is over traffic concerns after they completed a traffic impact analysis and heard complaints from nearby neighbors.

"We took one step back and said we're going to look at other properties within Brazos County," she said.

One of the many remaining options includes 50 acres of land local developer and Doctor Sam Harrison has offered to Blinn.

News 3 has learned part of his 200 acre tract along Old Reliance Road is in a flood plain. McMullen says that's something they would study during their due diligence.

Bryan Mayor Jason Bienski says that site is being looked at by Blinn.

"The last drawing that I saw would kind of put the campus on the middle of the center of the property," he said.

Bienski wants the second campus in Bryan.

"Blinn is Bryan, Bryan is Blinn. Blinn is our family and they've been in our community for many decades," Bienski said.

Blinn officials plan to meet monthly and form a real estate team for the expanded search.

Blinn hopes to have a new site selected very soon and plans for a new campus opening next year.

Lynntech Incorporated CEO John Clanton says he was surprised by the vote and had no indication Blinn might be backing out.

He added his company now plans to stay at that site rather than eventually move to a new location.
