Blinn College Housing Director Keith Thomas has been named the head coach of the Blinn College football team, College officials announced Wednesday.
A 35-year football veteran, Thomas begins his coaching duties Jan. 6.
“I’ve always considered Blinn one of the top junior college jobs in the nation,” Thomas said. “I’m fortunate to already know each player, and I’m excited about the opportunity to help them succeed on the field, but more importantly I look forward to helping them reach their academic and career goals.”
Thomas played tight end on Barry Switzer’s 1974 and ’75 national championship teams, and served as the Sooners’ running backs coach under John Blake from 1997-99. Thomas was head coach at Navarro College from 1994-97 and served 13 seasons as a Texas high school football coach before coming to Blinn as a judicial officer in 2012.
“We’re excited to add Keith Thomas to our athletic program,” Athletic Director Scott Schumacher said. “Keith has a clear vision of what is expected from our student-athletes both on and off the field, and he has an established track record of inspiring commitment and discipline in his student-athletes.”
Thomas described himself an offensive-minded coach who likes to spread the field.
“We’ll run a lot of play action and bootlegs,” he said.
Earlier this year, Thomas was named the College’s Housing Director, overseeing the College’s residence halls and student apartments. The Blinn – Brenham campus is home to 1,060 students – more than any other community college in the state. The College will evaluate its Department of Housing personnel needs before naming a possible replacement.
Blinn football is one of the most storied programs in the NJCAA, with four national championships, including the first back-to-back national titles in league history in 1995 and 1996. The Buccaneers have appeared in 12 bowl games and compiled a 285-205-11 record since 1964.
Nine former players, three coaches, three College administrators and the 1972 Buccaneer team have been inducted into the NJCAA Football Hall of Fame. Additionally, 47 former Buccaneers have played in the NFL and 90 have been named NJCAA All-Americans.
