The Blinn College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) helped its clients obtain $4.6 million in loans and generated 68 new jobs during the last fiscal year, Director Matthew Wehring told the College’s Board of Trustees during its regular meeting Tuesday night.

The three-person Blinn SBDC staff helped local business owners establish 10 new businesses and served 92 active clients in Washington, Colorado and Austin counties, according to the Fiscal Year 2013 report.

Over the past three years, Blinn’s SBDC has helped its clients create 52 new businesses and 309 new jobs, and helped them acquire $10.33 million in new capital.

“We believe in creating strong relationships with our clients,” Wehring said. “Our free consulting services can help local business owners create a solid business plan at no cost.”

In September, the Blinn SBDC was recognized by the University of Houston SBDC Network for its strong client relationships. Business Advisor John Tatum was honored as the second-highest job producer in the network after using his expertise to help his clients generate an additional 148 jobs, and Client Coordinator Carol Doersom was recognized as one of the network’s top coordinators.

Nationwide, the SBDC Network’s more than 1,000 locations helped clients obtain an estimated $4 billion in financing in 2012, and every dollar spent on the SBDC network enabled small businesses to access $35.55 in new capital. The SBDC Network generates a new job every seven minutes, $100,000 in capital every 13 minutes and a new business every 36 minutes.

The SBDC at Blinn College is a business consulting and training center that is part of the University of Houston Small Business Development Center Network, which serves 32 counties in Southeast Texas. The center provides free one-on-one consulting and low-cost training seminars.

In other business, the board heard a report from EMSI, Inc. Economist Aaron Olanie providing an overview of a recent economic impact study that found Blinn makes a $345.3 million annual impact on the local economy. The College will host special Wednesday presentations of the report’s findings at 10:30 a.m. in the Brenham campus Administration Building and at 2 p.m. in the Bryan campus Student Center.

Founded in 1883, Blinn College has the highest academic transfer rate in the nation and its tuition and fees average about one-third the cost of the same classes at four-year public universities. In addition to its campuses in Brenham, Bryan, Schulenburg and Sealy, the College teaches online courses, dual credit for high school and prepares students for quick employment through its career and technical certification programs.

Registration is available through March 5 for eight-week courses running March 6 – May 6. For enrollment information and to learn about financial aid opportunities, visit: www.blinn.edu.
