BRENHAM, WASHINGTON COUNTY - Two students and one advisor from Blinn College’s student government associations were honored for their service and leadership at the recent Texas Junior College Student Government Association (TJCSGA) state convention in Austin.

Bryan campus Social Sciences Professor Brandon Franke was named state advisor of the year after earning the designation at the regional conference in March. Jeremy Peel, a second-year student from Caldwell, won state student of the year, marking the first time a Blinn student has won the award in its 24-year Student Government Association (SGA) history.

“I can think of no one better to receive it,” Franke said of Peel’s award. “He exemplifies everything Blinn College, SGA and the TJCSGA stand for.”

Since Franke began guiding the organization in 1999, he has been named regional advisor of the year seven times. This marks the second time he has been honored as state advisor of the year.

“It’s a great honor to be recognized, though I don’t see what I’m doing as going above and beyond,” Franke said. “I see it as filling in a spot where there is a need. That’s what we are all called to do.”

Mary Barnes-Tilley, Social Sciences professor on the Brenham campus, was sworn in as the advisor for the TJCSGA’s Region IV. Garrett Smith, student activities coordinator on the Bryan campus, was sworn in as regional advisor-elect.

Oscar Reyes, a first-year student from Columbia who will serve as 2014-15 Bryan campus SGA president, was sworn into office as regional student president. Blinn’s Brenham campus SGA was elected to serve as regional secretary.

Blinn enrolled 18,413 students this Fall and has experienced 31.1 percent growth since 2006. Founded in 1883, the College’s tuition and fees average about one-third the cost of the same classes at most four-year public universities in the state. In addition to its campuses in Brenham, Bryan, Schulenburg and Sealy, the College teaches online courses, dual credit for high school and prepares students for quick employment through its career and technical certification programs.
