Sophomore guard Jazzmin Parker has signed to play for Texas Southern University next season, Blinn College women’s basketball coach Jeff Jenkins has announced.
Parker, a sophomore from Katy Mayde Creek, averaged 12.0 points and 3.1 rebounds in 30 regular-season games for the Buccaneers last season, helping guide the team to a program-record 32 victories. She transferred to Blinn after playing her freshman season at Texas Christian University, and was ranked the 15th-best Texas recruit coming out of high school by Joey Simmons’ Premier Basketball.
On March 2, she scored a season-high 24 points in a 94-88 loss to No. 1-ranked Trinity Valley, and in the second round of the national tournament she scored 23 points against Darton, Ga.
“I really believe she’s one of the best offensive players I’ve ever had,” Jenkins said. “Her midrange jumper is really, really good. In this day of attacking the rim or shooting the three, she can create her own shot and hit the midrange jumper. She’s a scorer.”
Parker received her associate’s degree from Blinn in May.
Texas Southern went 20-12 last season under coach Cynthia Cooper-Dykes, including 16-2 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. In April, Cooper-Dykes accepted the head coaching job at the University of Southern California and Johnetta Hayes-Perry was named the team’s new head coach.
Parker and the Buccaneers advanced to the NJCAA National Championships for just the second time in program history and the first since 1989. Blinn captured the first national tournament victories in program history with wins over Kaskaskia, Ill. and Darton.
