Brenda / Barbara? Barbara / Brenda?

Updated: Mon 11:51 AM, Jan 28, 2008

Can you tell the difference?

This past Saturday, Brenda Sims and I were at the OPAS Guild Gala together.  It was the first time in a long time no one has called me, “Brenda,” and no one called her, “Barbara.”

It’s kind of a strange phenomenon.  At least four or five times a week, someone will come up to me in the grocery store and say, “Hi, Brenda!”  They are always so wonderfully friendly, I’ve never had the heart to tell them that I’m actually Barbara.  Every now and then they’ll figure it out and correct themselves… apologetically.  Then, I feel bad that they felt bad.

It really doesn’t bother me to be mistaken for Brenda.  Have you seen her?  If I’m going to be confused for someone, I want it to be someone as beautiful and loving as my dear friend, Brenda.  I’d love to be like her when I grow up.

But, there’s the catch… “when I grow up.”  There are a couple of years between us (Brownie point, Barbara).

So, here’s what I think causes this phenomenon:  our viewers are so amazingly dedicated, and watch so often, that they know our names and our faces, but just switch the names around at a moment’s notice.  Not hard to do… Brenda Sims, Barbara Smith.  There are some similarities.  Rearrange the letters, give or take a few, and the names are practically the same (okay, maybe not, but you see what I mean).

Okay, Barbara, get to the point.

If you should happen to see me out, feel free to say hi.  I love hearing that you’re watching and you enjoy what we’re doing.  We have so much fun… it’s nice to know you’re having fun with us.  And, if you should happen to call me Brenda, that’s okay, too.  Chances are good I’ll just smile and play along, knowing that you’re just as much a fan of Brenda as I am.

(Brenda Sims can be seen on News 3 at Noon, Monday – Friday, at noon… go figure)

(Brenda Sims can not be found on the BLOG page… she’s a genius that way)
