A Good Day at the Office!

Posted: Fri 10:01 AM, Mar 07, 2008

KBTX was bustling with activity this morning, with dancing weather men inside and out!

I'm a native Texan... southeast Texas, to be exact.  So, snow is not something I'm used to seeing.  Not a ho-hum, everyday kind of thing.  Soooo... when I walked out of my house this morning and was met with sleet, that in itself was pretty exciting.

As the morning progressed, I knew we were in for something special.  Blake was practically bouncing off the walls when I walked into the studio.  A little while later, Bob French arrived.  In the six and  a half years I've been doing the morning show, this was the first time I've seen Bob.  I know he's stayed late for severe weather before, but this was the first time I've known him to come in for the morning show.  It was so much fun to see him!

Every couple of minutes, Blake would look outside and giggle.  No, not giggle.  He was laughing and grinning from ear to ear.  Imagine a kid at Christmas getting the best gift ever.  That's what it was like to watch him.  I don't know if he came across on the air that way or not, because Jon and I were constantly trying to talk him down.  He was truly having a great day at the office.

Then, there's Rodney "Dancing Weatherman" Harris!  Did you see him?  If not, you really missed it!  At the end of the morning show, we went back out to a live shot of Rodney along Highway 6.  He was throwing snowballs and dancing on the side of the road.  Talk about a kid at Christmas!  He was having so much fun... and allowing each of us to enjoy the experience right along with him.

Now, for what you didn't see:  a crew working hard behind the scenes to make sure these live shots came off without a hitch; producers and a director feverishly communicating with a lot of extra people to keep everything running smoothly; a lot of extra people who gave up precious sleep and warmth to get out in the cold and snow so you could SEE that it was snowing in the Brazos Valley and not just hear about it.  There were so many people involved in this morning's show, and they all deserve a huge amount of thanks and recognition.

I was asked recently to define 'teamwork'... and whether or not it was put into practice at KBTX.  I can say without hesitation that this morning's show was the definition of teamwork in action, and that the people of KBTX not only put it into practice, but excelled at it.

So, was this a good day at the office?  You bet!  My day started with a chill in the air, snow falling in the Brazos Valley, and the warmth of knowing I work with some of the best of the best.  Thanks to all!
