Back & Forth with Barbara & Steve -- TOPIC #4: iPhones

Updated: Mon 12:29 PM, May 03, 2010

Brazos Valley This Morning's Barbara Smith and Steve Fullhart often have quite the discussions on a variety of topics.  A lot of times, it's via e-mail.  Now, they're giving KBTX.com readers a look at their regular back and forth in their blog series, appropriately titled "Back & Forth".  Read what they've been chatting about, and chime in with your opinions!

STEVE: I know you're relatively new to the wonderful world of iPhones, so here's my question: great invention, or the greatest invention?

BARBARA: It's good.  My kids enjoy the apps while waiting in line somewhere, or in the car, or at restaurants where they don't care about what the grown-ups are discussing.  You have to realize, until I got this silly iPhone, I didn't even have voice mail set up on my last phone.  I didn't want it.  I just don't have the desperate need for people to be able to reach me at any time they want.  Most of the time, I don't even keep it with me.  If someone leaves a text or a voice mail, I'll get it when I see it next.  Just not a big deal to me.

Greatest invention (recent) in my world?  That would be my flat iron (it's a hair straightener, Steve).  I was reluctant to get one for years because I thought it would take too long.  Turns out it's the greatest thing EVER!  You don't have crazy, curly hair.  You wouldn't understand.

STEVE: I am Fully aware of what a flat iron is, and though I don't have curly hair, I do understand your dilemma.

And...ummm..."silly"? I'm going to have to ask you to take that back. I'm silly. Clowns are silly. iPhones? Ah-mazing! Did you know I leveled pictures I hung in my place with it? And blogged a trial with it? And built and ran my very own farm? And looked up the forecast because I didn't trust Shel?  Also, it's your move in Words with Friends.

My iPhone replaced the DVR as my favorite device, which replaced my HD television. I'm too device-happy, aren't I?

BARBARA: You are a bit happy with them.

As for Words with Friends... I'll get right on that.  And, by right on that, I mean the next time I'm anywhere near my phone and not actually driving the car.

I will admit, there are apps I enjoy.  I do like Words with Friends, and whatever that other word game is that's on my phone, but I can never remember what it's called.  I also like Unblock Me, and I would not want to be without Shazam.  I like having my music and phone all in one.  That's convenient.  I'm a mom.  My purse is full of other people's stuff (small toys, Life Savers, gum, Neosporin, etc).  So, the fewer items of my own I can carry, the better.

I do not, however, like not having buttons to push on my phone.  The touch screen is a bit too sensitive at times, for my taste.  There have been numerous times when I'll be in the middle of a phone conversation, only to have it switch to speaker phone OR put the person on hold.  Now, perhaps it's just that my face is too fat and THAT's the problem, not the phone, but I think I'd rather blame the phone, thank you very much.

All in all, it's a good, convenient device.  The greatest invention ever?  Not for me.  If I had to choose between driving cross-country, or going by covered wagon while talking on my iPhone, I think I'd rather take the car.

STEVE: I have Unblock Me, too...Level 122 and counting. Shazam is great. I don't have a purse. Your face is not fat.

The touch-screen typing...I actually prefer.  You have tiny hands, so maybe the tiny keyboard keys are easier for you. Me with my long fingers, I have a hard time with'em. Plus, the phone knows when I've misspelled words...love that!

BARBARA: Okay, I don't actually think the length of your fingers determines how difficult it is to press tiny keys... but, whatever.  You love that phone so much, I think you would come up with any excuse to use it and to say why it's superior to all others.  And, that's just fine.

By the way, since we started this latest Back & Forth, I've added two more people to my Words with Friends.  Oh, and the other one I love so much that I can never remember its name is Word Warp.  I'm afraid these two games have overtaken my Sudoku addiction.  Oh, well.  Guess it could be worse.

So do you have an iPhone? What do you think of them?
