Blog/Updates:

11:57 AM: Our forecast for Bryan/College Station -- which will update at noon -- will keep our high today at 48 degrees. As expected, increasing sunshine should allow temperatures to warm up a little with clearing skies from west to east.

We did drop tonight's low to 30 degrees. Clear skies and light winds should make for great maximum cooling, with lows dropping into the upper 20s once again in rural communities.

We also diminished the winds for today (N 5-10) and upgraded the cloud cover on Thursday from mostly sunny to sunny!

- Rodney Harris

11:01 AM: A forecast discussion will happen soon to determine whether or not forecast high temperatures are too warm today. The temperature has been hovering around 32 degrees in College Station for the past few hours, and if this "lack of warming" trend continues, we may have to shave a few degrees off the highs. With that being said, once the sun starts to dominate the skies, a quick warm-up cannot be ruled out either, which is why the current temperature forecast still stands.

If any updates are made to the forecast, the updated version should be posted shortly after lunchtime.

- Rodney Harris

10:03 AM: Normangee ISD and Buffalo ISD started school at 10 a.m. due to weather. There are no other delays or cancellations as travel conditions are no longer a concern due to winter weather.

- Rodney Harris

9:41 AM: The temperature in Bryan/College Station dropped to 30 degrees at 9 a.m., then quickly rose back to 32 degrees. Initially, temperatures will be slow to warm, but as we get more sunshine -- which will happen towards the afternoon -- temperatures are forecast to warm a little quicker. Even with our warm-up, our forecast high of 48 degrees is still pretty chilly.

- Rodney Harris

9:06 AM: We have updated the forecast for Bryan/College Station to remove any mention of precipitation for the rest of the morning.

- Rodney Harris

9:02 AM: The Winter Storm Warning for Lee county has been allowed to expire.

- Rodney Harris

8:12 AM: In a previous entry, I mentioned that all advisories have been canceled. There is one exception. A Winter Storm Warning is still technically in effect for south Central Texas, for Austin, Georgetown, Burnet and surrounding areas. Lee county is also including in the warning for travel concerns, but the threat for wintry weather has ended for Giddings and the warning will be allowed to expire at 9:00 a.m.

- Rodney Harris

7:47 AM: We have reached the coldest part of the morning and temperatures should start to rise, meaning if you're not seeing any ice now, then your threat has officially come to an end.

I wouldn't be surprised to see misty/drizzly conditions continue for the next hour or so and if that takes place anywhere north of Bryan/College Station -- or in a location below freezing -- it could still freeze on contact. However, it won't be heavy enough to cause any problems and you may not even be able to tell the difference. This all amounts to the idea that everyone should be clear of any wintry weather concerns and if you have seen a little ice, it should melt by mid-morning.

- Rodney Harris

7:01 AM: The Freezing Rain Advisory has been canceled for all of the Brazos Valley. All advisories have either expired or been canceled.

- Rodney Harris

6:53 AM: The Freezing Rain Advisory is still in effect, but may be canceled before 9 a.m. as it is looking like most locations should not see any major travel concerns.

- Rodney Harris

6:40 AM: Overall, precipitation is starting to end across the Brazos Valley and the temperature in Bryan/College Station just went up to 34 degrees. As a result, I don't think there will be any travel problems in Bryan/College Station.

Drizzle and freezing drizzle will continue which will result in some patches of very thin ice -- at most -- on bridges and overpasses in rual locations through 9 a.m.

- Rodney Harris

6:00 AM: The Winter Weather Advisory has been canceled for Leon, Milam and Robertson counties as the precipitation is ending from west to east.

The Freezing Rain Advisory remains in effect for Bryan/College Station as freezing drizzle will remain possible through 9 a.m. However, I don't expect any major travel problems since the precipitation will be very light.

- Rodney Harris

3:32 AM: I'm just getting word from the National Weather Service that the Freezing Rain Advisory has now been canceled for Polk, Montgomery, and San Jacinto Counties. Temperatures have remained well above freezing in these areas and significant icing is no longer expected. Temperatures here in the immediate area (Brazos County and points southward) continue to be above freezing. However, isolated icing could still be an issue and therefore the Freezing Rain Advisory remains in effect.

-Blake Mathews

3:00 AM: A heavy batch of precipitation is working its way into the Brazos Valley. Though I haven't received any word of ice on roadways, TXDOT crews are out in full force across Burleson, Leon, Milam and Robertson Counties sanding roadways and overpasses where temperatures remain below freezing. Icing may very well be occurring in these counties and extreme caution is urged as you head to work this morning. As for the rest of us in Bryan/College Station and points southward, the temperatures have hovered at 34 degrees for the past two hours. It appears that as this last batch of moisture works its way over the area, icing should be kept to a minimum as most of us remain above freezing. However, it should be stressed that all bridges and overpasses should be treated as if they were ice covered. At this time there are no school closings though some are starting late. Please stay tuned to KBTX and KBTX.com for the very latest.

-Blake Mathews

1:34 AM: So far this early morning things have been fairly quiet. We have had no reports of icing on any of the area roadways. Temperatures at Easterwood Airport, the official recording site, have fluctuated between 33 and 34 degrees. Our western counties, i.e. Burleson, Leon, Milam and Robertson Counties have remained below freezing for the last several hours and therefore icing on bridges and overpasses could certainly be an issue. As for the rest of us, just a cold drizzle is about the extent of what we have seen. Nonetheless, there is still a Freezing Rain Advisory for the immediate area and therefore icing is still very much a possibility. There is a pretty solid line of precipitation to the west of Austin currently pushing east-southeast. If the temperatures can drop to or just below 32, then icing could be a major issue. If we stay at 33 or 34 like we have been for the last several hours, then we'll experience nothing more than ordinary wet roads. At this time, the prudent thing to do is to treat all overpasses and bridges as if there is ice on them. We'll continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.

-Blake Mathews

10:00 PM (Tues, Jan 27): As of this hour, temperatures are hovering around 30 degrees across Milam County with temperatures at or just below freezing in parts of Burleson, Robertson and and Leon Counties. A significant ice storm could be in the making and it certainly appears that an icy mess could greet you by morning. Ice accumulations of a tenth to three tenths of an inch are possible. That is a significant ice storm for our area and icing on trees and cars is likely as well as bridges and overpasses. If trends continue, an Ice Storm Warning may be needed.

The radar has really lit up tonight as the upper-level disturbance encroaches in on our area. Temperatures as of 10 PM are now at 34 degrees, just two degrees shy of the rain turning to ice. We will be here all night long doing cut-ins as needed. Remember we're always online at kbtx.com where the latest will be posted as we know more.

-Blake Mathews

3:33 PM (Tues, Jan 27): We are still monitoring the possibility of a significant winter weather event to affect portions, if not all, of the Brazos Valley overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning. There are a slew of winter weather advisories in affect across the area ranging from a Winter Storm Warning to Winter Weather Advisories to Ice Storm Warnings. Here locally, the Winter Storm Watch that was in effect for the central portions of the area has now been changed to a Freezing Rain Advisory and now includes the counties of Montgomery, Polk, and San Jacinto Counties.

We will be here all night tonight monitoring the possibility of very hazardous driving conditions throughout the area. The further north and west you are, the more severe the conditions are expected to be with near impossible driving conditions in the Metroplex. Please turn to the weather blogs where we will provide in greater detail what conditions can be expected.

-Blake Mathews

11:49 AM (Tues, Jan 27): We have lowered temperatures throughout the afternoon, with forecast to fall into the 30s from Bryan/College Station northward by 5 p.m. A question that will be asked during afternoon forecast discussions is whether or not we expect temperatures to drop below freezing earlier in the evening. Look for updates on that throughout the afternoon. The official forecast for Bryan/College Station will update at noon to reflect the cooler temperatures and lower rain chances during the afternoon.

- Rodney Harris

9:32 AM (Tues, Jan 27): We are currently preparing an update to the forecast for Bryan/College Station which will likely include cooler temperatures through the afternoon and early evening hours. As of 9:30 a.m., it is 50 degrees at Easterwood Field and our current noon forecast is 49. It will likely be cooler at noon, 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Modifying the temperature forecast is not unusual when strong, arctic air moves into the region, as is the case today. You can look for an updated forecast by noon Tuesday.

- Rodney Harris 8:38 AM (Tues, Jan 27): Here's a rundown of the advisories in effect and what you can expect for each:

The Winter Weather Advisory is for the potential of rain, freezing rain and sleet with total ice accumulations up to 1/10 of an inch in Leon, Milam and Robertson counties. This will go into effect at 6 p.m. Tuesday evening through noon Wednesday.

The Winter Storm Watch is for the potential of rain and freezing rain with total ice accumulations up to 1/10 of an inch in Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Houston, Madison, Trinity and Washington counties. This is currently in effect through Wednesday morning with the potential of being upgraded to a warning or advisory later today.

The Winter Storm WARNING is for the potential of ice accumulations up to one quarter inch thick in Lee county. This will go into effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday through 11 a.m. Wednesday morning.

- Rodney Harris

7:46 AM (Tues, Jan 27): When you get a chance, step outdoors! The front is now moving across Bryan/College Station. During my last weather cut-in, the temperature for Bryan/College Station changed from 66 degrees to 57 degrees, live on the air. The winds also shifted from the south to northwest. The next time you are outdoors, see if you can feel the difference now, from when you left for work earlier this morning!

Temperatures should continue to slowly fall throughout the rest of the day. Repeating -- no warm-up will occur today. We should be in the lower-to-mid 40s by 5 pm.

- Rodney Harris

7:32 AM (Tues, Jan 27): Our official forecast now calls for low temperatures to drop below freezing Wednesday morning in Bryan/College Station. As precipitation chances increase to near 100% after midnight, the threat of rain and light freezing rain will exists in the Twin Cities.

I don't think we will have to worry about travel problems in Bryan/College Station, with the exception of a few bridges and overpasses. We may have bigger travel concerns those of you in Hearne, Caldwell, Cameron, Franklin, Centerville, and Crockett, beginning during the overnight hours Wednesday through Wednesday morning.

- Rodney Harris

6:12 AM (Tues, Jan 27): A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Leon, Milam and Robertson county through Wednesday morning.

6:11 AM (Tues, Jan 27): A Winter Storm WARNING is in effect for Lee county through Wednesday morning.

6:10 AM (Tues, Jan 27): A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Houston, Madison, Trinity and Washington counties through Wednesday morning.

4:45 PM (Mon, Jan 26): A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Lee county from Tuesday evening through 11 a.m. Wednesday morning. 12:30 PM (Mon, Jan 26): As of now, we are forecasting a low of 33 degrees Wednesday morning in Bryan/College Station, which would mean the chance of frozen precip in-town is slim, and the chance for accumulations slimmer.

However, temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing in Leon, Milam and Robertson counties -- the watch area -- in addition to Houston county. These counties will have the potential for freezing rain and sleet, with accumulations not to exceed 1/4 of an inch.

- Rodney Harris

11:25 AM (Mon, Jan 26): Click here for a map showing the Winter Storm Watch valid through noon Wednesday.

- Rodney Harris

11:00 AM (Mon, Jan 26): A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Leon, Milam and Robertson counties through noon Wednesday. A Winter Storm Watch means that there is a potential for ice accumulations that may impact travel.

10:57 AM (Mon, Jan 26): There is a chance of wintry precipitation across portions of the Brazos Valley Wednesday morning.

A cold front will move across the region Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, potentially dropping temperatures below freezing. This will fall into a period when precipitation will continue, thus creating the threat of freezing rain and sleet across Leon, Milam, Robertson and Houston counties.
