To Avery with Love

The first part of my four part series, “To Avery with Love,” will air tonight at 10 on News Three. It’s a moving story about organ donation.

In the summer of 2009 we reported on the death of 8-year-old Dalton Lawyer of College Station. Dalton was on vacation with his family in Ohio when he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bike. He suffered severe brain injuries and died five days after the accident. His parents, Jim and Jeri Lawyer, donated his organs. Through their generous gift, Dalton saved four lives and he has left a lasting legacy.

During the series you will meet a little girl, Avery Toole of Boston. Avery received Dalton’s heart. You will see how these two families reached out to each other during the most difficult time, and how they’ve found comfort through their relationship.

I sincerely hope this story will start many conversations about organ donation.

I also want to thank the Lawyer and Toole families for sharing their stories with us. I’m truly inspired by their strength and love for each other.
