Post Concert: Thoughts From A Middle Aged Father/Rocker

It’s been a month since I have written about my upcoming AC/DC concert with my 14 year old son Geoffrey. I had a real hard time getting tickets for the sold out event. Three different times in the final 12 hours my “deals” fell through. My alternative was to hit the concert and the ticket scalpers at the last minute.

Remember this was a sold out concert, so that plan could have been pretty risky.  Tickets to the concert were to be my son’s birthday and Christmas presents combined.  He had told everyone he was going with his dad to AC/DC.  With that kind of pressure, I couldn’t let him down.  I couldn’t let myself down either.  About an hour before the opening act and just as we were about to head out the door for the ticket scalping adventure of my life, I got the call that one of the previous “deals” was back on. Although I was pretty jazzed, I couldn’t tell my son.  I had been telling him all along, “don’t worry, we’ll get tickets”,

Once inside the AT&T Center in San Antonio, the place was packed. Rock music filled the arena.  We were all rocking!  We had about an hour to get to our seats. In between us and the seats was the merchandising area, t-shirts, caps and everything else AC/DC. A teenager's dream , a father's nightmare.  My son settled on a t-shirt. It took him an hour to get it.  It’s been a long time since I’ve been to a concert, even longer since I  bought a T-shirt. Not since Sting and Police played in Austin in 1982(?) have I bought into buying merchandising,  I had no idea how much Tees are going for.  Any guess?  $50

We found our seats 9 minutes before Brian Young and Angus would stroll, rock or herky onto stage.  It was tough finding our seats.  Low lighting, searching through the smoky haze (can you guess) and climbing to the top of the arena (I never told you how bad these tickets were) got us in place just in time.

The concert was loud!  Our ears were ringing, even with earplugs.  The music was great.  We heard songs from my past, songs from the new album, songs I didn’t know but Geoffrey screamed the words to.  Although we couldn’t hear each other, we communicated effectively.  Glances towards each other, head rocks, fist pumps and smiles of appreciation and approval from son to father, but more importantly, father to son.

A great night, a great concert, a great time!
