As this era of the blog begins, there is perhaps no more appropriate way to start than to offer those two special words, “thank you.”  Recently, we’ve been reminded of what helps to make this area special.

First, KBTX noticed a campaign that had been published on a number of occasions on behalf of Habitat for Humanity.  Two rather sizeable donations totaling $40,000 simply  didn’t come through.  Without those funds, completion of the Blitz Build would have been a challenge.

A local account executive with KBTX came up with an idea for a smaller version of the KBTX Food for Families Food Drive, using a broadcast day to ask for donations for Habitat for Humanity.  Thanks to the support of Habitat, David Gardner Jewelers, Post Oak Mall and local law enforcement, we set the date for the drive not really knowing what to expect.  In just over 18 incredible hours, you responded with over $47,000 in cash donations, enough for a home and much needed air conditioning elements for other units! – just because we asked.  One gentleman found a ride in from Burleson County to donate $20,000, stating that other people needed the housing more than he needed the money.

Not long after, Twin City Mission announced the kick-off of their capital campaign that will result in a long-overdue new facility.  After KBTX aired a story about Twin City Mission, a couple from nearby dropped off a $2,000 check.

Then, the terrible turn of events in Burleson County a few days ago started with a carjacking.  The woman whose car was taken following an alleged burglary was left without transportation, a necessity given her personal situation.  After KBTX aired a story about this situation, a local business allowed the victim to “rent a car” for a dollar a day.

There are many of us who came to Bryan-College Station with no intention of staying THIS long.  Perhaps like your family, if you ever wonder why this relationship has lasted this long, we need only to look at these three examples of people who share the passion of KBTX about this area we serve.  It is about working together to make life better for our friends and neighbors.

We may not always agree on all issues, but at the heart of who we collectively are, is a dedication to caring for each other.
