Big Changes Ahead

Updated: Thu 3:18 PM, Jan 28, 2010

Our next weather maker is sliding down the west coast and eventually will take a right turn across the Baja Peninsula towards the Lone Star State.  This is one of the more potent systems we have seen over the past month, therefore gear up for the chance of a heavy soaking followed up by a brief shot of Old Man Winter once again.

Let's start with this.  Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for the Texas Panhandle and almost all of Oklahoma.  As this system swings across, it is not out of the question to see 7-12 inches of snow mixed with 30+ mph winds causing near white out conditions.  If you have plans to travel north by the end of the week, you may want to think about holding off on that until at least the weekend.

For us here at home, we'll see two impacts from this system.  First, being the opportunity to see rain, some heavy at times and thunderstorms.  As of today, it looks like this system has slowed just a touch, putting our best bet for that rain late Thursday, overnight and possibly lingering into our Friday morning commute.  By the looks of things, from the latest run of our long range computer model (to the right), some spots of localized flooding looks to be a growing concern, especially in those lower dips in the roads or runoff areas.  More on that to come as we get a better picture of just how much moisture we will actually be working with by week's end.

Now, the second impact will be blustery and colder conditions behind the cold front associated with this system Friday afternoon.  It looks like temperatures will fall into the 30s and 40s during the day Friday, factored in with a wind chill making things feel much colder at times.  Overnight lows are slated to drop into the upper 20s to low 30s across the Brazos Valley  by Saturday and Sunday morning.  The good news for all you cold weather haters out there, unlike our last major cold front, we will moderate and rebound our temperatures a bit as our next weather system will quickly swing in around the Monday time frame....adding in yet another shot at rain.

Stick around as things get interesting...in the mean time, go ahead and grab the umbrellas for Thursday and the winter coats for Friday.
