Blocking High Means Sunny Skies

Posted: Mon 10:19 AM, Feb 15, 2010

Today is the 15th of February...roughly half way through the month.  And, its no secret that it has been a wet one.  Up to today, Easterwood Airport has received 2.41" of rain for the month.  For this entire year, College Station has seen 4.56" of rain.  Needless to say...its been soggy and there hasn't been much sunshine...until this week, that is!

After our strong cold front pushed through Valentine's afternoon...today we're cool across the Brazos Valley, but we are also setting the scene to see more sunshine in the forecast this week rather than rainfall.

Here's what's happening...to the west (as seen below) a large ridge of high pressure is beginning to spike way up into Canada buckling the jet stream, and the center of that ridge, over the Pacific Northwest for much of the week.

As we head towards Friday, we'll see a pattern that you normally find during the Spring:  the Rex Block.  Now, while this won't be a true Rex Block...its about as close as you can get with our blocking high and an approaching low fighting it out just off the West Coast to become the dominant weather system. The end result...nothing happens!  Both systems just sit there spinning and churning with little movement occurring.

Our high will win out through much of the week, helping to keep things quiet and sunny across the Brazos Valley through Thursday.  However, eventually, as this next low gains strength while hanging out in the Pacific this week...that could set us up for some pretty good rain chances next week.  But......lets, not worry about that for now!  Grab the sunglasses and enjoy some good ol' fashion Vitamin D courtesy of our old friend, the Rex Block.
