Chance of Thunderstorms Followed by Cooler, Fall Weather

Updated: Wed 9:42 AM, Oct 12, 2011

Cold Front Approaches:

Wednesday morning started with a disturbance moving through North Texas, pushing thunderstorms with gusty, 40mph winds and ample lightning towards the Dallas / Ft. Worth area.  As this disturbance moves closer to the Brazos Valley -- and eventually passing us by to bring a cold front through overnight -- a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast for today. All of this is associated with a deep, upper-level trough pushing through the Lone Star State today.

Chance of Severe Storms?

While the rain chance is only at 30% today, there is a slight chance that a thunderstorm could become quite strong, if not briefly severe, before the end of the day today -- especially in our northeastern counties where The Storm Prediction Center has traced out a "Slight Risk" for today (also the area most likely to see rain today).  Should a storm show some teeth this afternoon gusty winds, ample cloud-to-ground lightning and possibly even small hail will be a possibility for today.

Nicer Weekend Weather

After this cold front passes through, a dry northwesterly flow will set up over the area.  Sunny skies are in the forecast from Thursday through Sunday along with daytime highs around the mid 80s and lows falling down into the lower-to-mid 50s.  The only downside is fire danger will be slightly elevated due to the low humidity on hand.

Another Front Next Week

Pretty progressive weather pattern looks to be setting up with another cold front slated to swing into the Brazos Valley next Tuesday.  For now, some of our computer models are suggesting a chance of rain moving in ahead of this front.  The more exciting part is that those models are hinting at highs only in the 70s by Wednesday.  Still a bit out there, so take this with a grain of salt...but something to keep an eye on!
