Thursday Blog: Drink of Water Headed This Way

Updated: Thu 8:58 PM, Sep 27, 2012

Big word around the PinPoint Weather Center this week has been rain -- much needed rain, at that.  As each computer model comes in, rain chances for the weekend don't seem to be a question of "IF" it will rain but "HOW MUCH" and "WHEN"...  Those are the questions that we'll be trying to pin the answer down on over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Much Much Needed Rain

Latest Drought Monitor came out this morning -- as it does every Thursday -- and not much change for the good or bad across the Brazos Valley.  Drought conditions have now spread into Leon County and Abnormally Dry criteria has slowly leaked farther to the east.  Here's a look:

Soggy Outlook Ahead

You're looking a 20% to 30% chance of scattered showers and a few isolated thunderstorms in the face as we head into your Friday evening plans and high school football games.  While the rain is likely to not be widespread in the afternoon, as an upper-level low develops over West Texas, our rain chances will steadily start to come up during the evening and overnight hours.

Heading into Saturday, especially after daybreak, rain chances will increase to a 60% chance of rain (at least).  While it isn't expected to fall as intense thunderstorms or heavy gully washers -- a good, steady light to moderate rain will be possibly for a better part of Saturday.  The devil is in the details on this rain chance as it will highly depend on exactly where that upper-low tracks as to where the heaviest rain will fall.  For now, we'll keep the heaviest of Texas rains to our west and southwest.

Overall, I think that anywhere from 1/2" to 2" of rain will be common totals across backyards in the Brazos Valley, with localized pockets of 2.5" to 4" possible for some -- especially in the southern and southwestern portion of the area.  Below is an early look at the PinPoint Computer Model Forecast:
