Some of the coldest temperatures we've seen this year are forecast for the Brazos Valley tonight. Temperatures will easily dip into the upper 20s in town and in some locations even low 20s are possible. Combine that with winds near 20 mph at times, and we could see some difficult weather ahead. Wind chills could reach the teens with the howling winds and the cold temperatures expected tonight.
The best thing you can do is be prepared before the cold weather hits. Remember the 4 P's when planning for cold weather:
Pets: Ideally, bring your pets inside. They can get hypothermia just like people. A garage or mud room makes an excellent overnight hotel for your outdoor pets. It gets them out of the wind and keeps them warm. If you can't keep them inside, make sure they have adequate shelter. Also, don't forget to make sure they have access to clean, unfrozen water.
Plants: Cover any sensitive plants with cloth, not plastic. Plastic will cut off oxygen to the plant. Also, don't leave the covering on any longer than necessary. Remove the cover as soon as the cold snap is over.
Pipes: Insulate any pipes that run along exterior walls. Allow pipes to slowly drip to keep water moving through the pipe. This will help keep ice from forming along the interior sides of the pipe.
People: Make sure to dress in layers! Include hats, scarves and gloves. Frostbite and hypothermia can set in if you're outside too long. Keep trips outdoors brief.
