Monday Blog: Hurricane Sandy

Posted: Mon 11:04 AM, Oct 29, 2012

The weather here in the Brazos Valley is absolutely beautiful.  Why? Believe it or not, it is because of the biggest weather (or any) story in the country -- Hurricane Sandy.  With the massive storm barreling towards the East Coast, the Jet Stream is essentially locked up until the storm gets caught up on the eastern edge of a trough of low pressure trying to swing through New England.

Here is the latest from the National Hurricane Center on Hurricane Sandy:

As you can see with the middle graphic, tropical storm force winds extend 485 miles outward from the center of Sandy (spanning 11 states) and Category 1 hurricane force winds extend 175 miles, mainly to the southwest of the storms center.

Long lasting strong, damaging winds and exceptional storm surge are the main concerns with Hurricane Sandy.  Take an already large high high tide due to a full moon and add in Sandy's storm surge, and record setting surge and flooding is expected from New Jersey, New York City and a good portion of New England.

On top of winds, rain and storm surge -- snow and blizzards.  Something you don't normally hear about with hurricanes, but due to the strong cold front that has blown across most of the country, blizzard conditions and heavy, wet snow is happening from the mountains to the ground of North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

Though out the day, I'll be snagging pictures and reports from Twitter, Facebook , Instagram etc and adding them below.  This will be a storm to watch, wait and feel for our friends across the Eastern United States.
