Tuesday Blog: Summer's Last Stand?

Updated: Tue 10:59 AM, Sep 04, 2012

Let's start with a look back this morning -- it'll make you feel a little better about the current forecast.

For The Record

First interesting fact -- the record high for today being 112° is not only the hottest September 4th ever recorded in Bryan / College Station but it is also the hottest temperature EVER recorded in Bryan / College Station.  Quite a bit of heat around this time in 2000 with tomorrow's (September 5th's) record high sitting at 111°,

Second interesting fact -- looking back at this day last year, we hit 100° officially at Easterwood Airport.  You might have glanced at the forecast for today and are thinking "...big deal, we're expected to reach 100° today as well."  Welp...you're correct but the fact of the matter is, last year's 100° was the 62nd day to hit the triple digit mark in 2011.  As of 2012, we've only hit 100° or better 20 times.

Here's a look at our expected highs for today -- factor in a heat index and it could feel as hot as 103° - 106° by the middle of the afternoon.

Late Summer Cold Front

It's not out of the question to find a cold front this early in September, here in the Brazos Valley, and it's great to see one in our 7 Day Forecast.

The timing of this front still has plenty of opportunity to change -- but as of this morning it looked like it might get to the area by lunchtime on Saturday.  While it would cool things down a bit heading into Saturday night, it could also bring a few showers and thunderstorms along and ahead of that front as folks are out tailgating and getting ready for this week's A&M vs. Florida game.

For now, we'll call for a 30% chance of getting rained on / thunderstorms popping up for Saturday's festivities -- and of course we'll keep an eye on it as the weekend gets closer.  Behind that front though, we'll be in for a treat.  Highs are expected to only top off in the upper 80s to low 90s Sunday and Monday, with overnight lows looking to fall into the 60s!

Stay tuned, we'll keep you up to date on any changes!
