I know what you are thinking: 'Our next cold front?! But we just had a cold front come through here on Monday!"

It'll take a few days -- but our next cold front is already on the schedule and this one will have a bit more teeth than the one that came through early this week.

Get Ready for Wind 

If you enjoy a quiet, calm, sunny and mild day -- today is the day to be out and about.  Starting tomorrow (Thursday), we'll kick in a south to southeast wind at 5 to 15mph, alongside gusts upwards of 20mph at times.  We take that wind and we'll increase it to 10-20mph on Friday, followed by 15-25mph on Saturday, with gusts upwards of 25mph to 30mph at times.  

All of this wind will be in response to falling pressure in the atmosphere, as our next upper-level trough digs down the western side of the United States. (source of that trough is a low pressure system moving out of the Gulf of Alaska and towards the Pacific Northwest -- pictured below) That same trough will be the source of our next cold front that will change things up by the end of your upcoming weekend and on into early next week.

Thunderstorms to Wrap Up the Weekend

As is the normal with stronger cold fronts (such as the one we are expecting) this time of the year, there is a chance of showers, thunderstorms and possibly a touch of severe weather when the cooler air arrives.  Right now the timing looks to fall between late Sunday night and into the very early hours of Monday morning.  

What will likely occur is a line of showers and thunderstorms will break through the "cap" in the atmosphere in North and West Texas on Sunday and then continue it's movement towards the Brazos Valley out ahead and along our approaching cold front.  We will likely see a squall line of storms set up -- strong, damaging winds racing out ahead of this line of storms is where the severe aspect could come in.  Something that is not a complete given just yet, but something that is likely.

Where the good news lies is that these storms will be coming at us during the nocturnal, overnight hours.  (at least, that's what the timing looks like for right now)  Without daytime heating being present, the severe threat decreases a bit so we aren't anticipating widespread severe weather.  Most of that should stay to our north on Sunday and then possibly pick up a bit more to our south and east on Monday.

Cooler Temperatures on the Way

Thanks to the stronger and warmer winds coming our way to wrap up the week, temperatures will be back into the low to mid 80s as we head into the weekend.  

Once the storm threat passes and the front moves on by, our afternoon highs are only expected to top off in the low to mid 60s for the start of next week.  Overnight lows, you ask? Well...get ready for a chill as some of our extended computer models are dropping temperatures into the 30s by next Tuesday morning!
