Aggie Fan Zone Set to Open Saturday

The setup is underway for what will be an eventful weekend of Aggie football. Not only does A&M take their home field for the first time in 2004, but the Aggie Fan Zone makes its debut.

"We thought this would be a great way to get people to come to the games earlier, make it more of a festive atmosphere," said Jeff Schmahl, A&M's Senior Associate Athletic Director.

Live music, food booths and an area for the youngest Ag fans will open three hours prior to kickoff. In addition, at around 11:30 AM, the entire team will march down Joe Routt Boulevard into Kyle Field.

"It'll be the chance for the fans to see the players up close and personal," said Schmahl. "And I think it's something the players will really enjoy, and I think the fans will really enjoy it, too."

While ticket sales for the home opener against the Wyoming Cowboys have been slow, athletic department officials hope the addition of the Fan Zone will make Aggie games more fan- and family-friendly events.

"Aggie fans love to come to College Station. They love to Texas A&M University," said Schmahl. "There's so much atmosphere here. There's tradition, there's history that many of the fans have, and so this is just another added bonus, added attraction, I think, to Aggie football games."

Another added attraction, the premier of Aggie Gameday Live on KBTX, which will eminate from the Fan Zone. The sports department has worked for months in preparation for the first show.

"This is just a great way to bring everybody together a couple hours before the ball game gets started, and then they zip right into the stadium and we kick things off, and the rest will be history," said KBTX Sports Director Darryl Bruffett.
