Short Move; Big Benefits

Burleson County is using every incentive it can to get new companies in the area. But a short move means one Snook business will reap the benefits.

For almost 50 years Slovacek Sausage has been the heart of industry in Snook.

"Over the last several years we've been growing steadily and now we've just outgrown our current facility," says co-owner Tim Rabroker.

Rabroker says the company is building a second facility in Snook which means more jobs and better production.

"We will be building a facility that's approximately 20,000 square feet and will be able to quadruple our production," Rabroker says.

The Texas Enterprise Zone Program is making the move more beneficial.

Approved by the state, Slovacek will be reimbursed for the state's portion of sales tax.

That is up to $2500 per employee that works for the sausage plant over a period of 5 years.

And the owners say the new facility will create up to 25 new jobs.

"We're just taking advantage of the opportunities that are out there," Rabroker says.

But while Slovacek is thriving in Snook, other businesses are moving out. The county hopes new incentives will change that."

Ben Flencher of the Burleson County Industrial Foundation says they are working hard to attract more businesses like Slovacek.

"It means a lot to us to kind of grow our own businesses as they have grown up in Burleson County," Flencher says.

And because Slovacek is the first business in the county to take advantage of the Texas Enterprise Zone Program, they hope others will follow creating a bigger tax base.

"The enterprise zone is going to save Slovacek Sausage sales tax on a good portion of their income and by being able to purchase new equipment and then create more jobs," Flencher says.

Jobs that communities like Snook desperately need to continue growing.
