Brazos Valley Burn Bans: The following counties are under a Burn Ban: Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Houston, Lee, Leon, Madison, Milam, Robertson, San Jacinto, Trinity, Walker, Washington
Bryan school board members had plenty to talk about at Thursday nights meeting....including naming their new superintendent.
Mike Cargill can now take interim off his title. In closed session, the board decided to make him BISD's new superintendent. District officials say the former Bryan High School principal will earn $140,000 a year as superintendent under a three-year contract.
A length of the time was spent discussing a list of campuses that need renovations, which they could possibly include in the bond package.
A presentation of five of the oldest campuses were discussed in detail of what needed to be done and how much it would cost to revonvate. Bonham Elementary, Crockett Elementary, Kemp Elementary, Milam Elementary and Carver Early Childhood center were all built in the 60's.
Most of them were last remodeled in the early 90's. A total estimate for all 5 schools...$15. 3 million.
The board also talked about finishing some upgrades in schools built in the 80's. Houston, Navarro, Fannin, Branch, Johnson, Long, and Rayburn will receive upgrades that include new carpet, fresh paint and fixing any erosion problems. Estimated cost for those repairs are just over $11 million for all seven schools.
Merrill Green, BISD School Board President adds "We're looking into the fact we need a substantial amount of repair in some areas and additions to some schools. Obviously trying to get rid of portable buildings. A lot of expense comes in our air conditioning, electrical work and all of those things add up to a great deal of money. We're trying to proritize."
No action was taken at Thursday nights meeting, but decisions need to be made soon in order to hold a bond election in early spring. Two more informational meetings are left before a bond package will be put together.
The next meeting is scheduled for October 21st.
