Vacant Plaza Hotel Tower To Be Imploded

*10 P.M. Update*

New information Friday night on the eventual demolition of the old Plaza Hotel in College Station.

It could be a pretty spectacular site when the Plaza is imploded, possibly as soon as this summer.

One of Bryan-College Station's tallest buildings will be reduced to rubble.

It's the end of the line for what many see as College Station's biggest eyesore.

The 17-story Plaza Hotel is going to be imploded sometime after May to make way for new multi-million dollar development of apartments, retail stores, and restaurants.

Hayley Scotti has seen it fall apart firsthand at Coldwell Banker where she works as a Buyer's Agent across Texas Avenue.

"Yeah we would come in and every now and then different days we'd see different windows broken out and with the current storms different rooftops blown off," said Scotti.

June will mark the two year anniversary the Plaza Hotel closed for good and in that time the property has really fallen apart. While the sidewalk resembles a jungle of weeds a sign of change is already here with a Precision Demolition truck trailer sign in the lot.

"We're really excited to see what's new is going in especially since it's in an intersection to a gateway over to A&M," Scotti added.

It's unknown what time of day and when the massive monstrosity will be filled with explosives.

The implosion will likely look something like one seen in North Texas a few years ago but on a smaller scale in a less dense place.

Fort Worth residents saw the 30-story Landmark Tower come tumbling down during a March 2006 implosion in downtown.

Area business owners and employees like Troy Weigand with Coldwell Banker think the redevelopment will be good in the long run.

"We don't have many implosions in Bryan-College Station so this is a first but I would imagine being so close that we'll probably have to be out here for sometime you know. Is it a day is it 3 or 4 hours? I have no idea," said Weigand.

A team from Lewisville-based Precision Demolition spent the week in College Station already making plans for the future fall.

The new development is expected to start soon after the demolition is completed.

Breaking news Friday night on what will happen to the old Plaza Hotel in College Station.

We now know it will be imploded.

The once popular 17-story hotel that sits across from the Texas A&M campus has become a big eyesore and now the new property owners want it to come down to make room for a new development.

Crews from Precision Demolition have been at the Plaza Hotel this week making plans to implode one of the tallest buildings in town.

A date has not yet been set for when the implosion will happen but we're told it will be sometime after May.

Local businesses tell News 3 they are excited about the redevelopment and think it will be good for the area in the long run despite some businesses potentially being displaced and streets closing for the event, which hundreds if not thousands of people will be eager to see.

"Yeah we're very excited because it's been an eyesore. We've seen all the windows get broken out we're really excited to see what's new is going in. Especially since it's in an intersection to a gateway over to A&M," said Hayley Scotti, a Coldwell Banker Buyer's Agent across the street from the Plaza.

The Plaza site will be redeveloped in the coming years with 600 apartment units, restaurant and retail and even a planned parking garage.

Construction on the multi-million dollar housing and retail development at that site will begin later this summer after demolition is finished.

News 3 will have more on the plan Friday after NCAA Basketball.
