Some once mistreated equines are now in safe homes. Last week 19 horses, mules, and donkeys were seized from a Grimes County man.

Denise Crosthwait, a member of the Bluebonnet Equine Human Society described the day she helped rescue 19 horses, donkeys, and mules in Plantersville over two weeks ago.

" Most of them were starved. They were dehydrated. A lot of them are fearful. They probably hadn't been handled very much in the past," said Crosthwait.

The animal’s owner, 29-year-old Jason Wenzel, was charged with 25 counts of cruelty to animals. Five animals were found dead on the property.

Crosthwait and other members of Bluebonnet Equine are caring for the animals now.

Crosthwait says the two horses and the mule she's nursing back to health are doing better.

" Their dispositions have gotten a lot better. They seem to be a lot more trusting. They actually look a little bit better just from having some food and water. It takes a little while for them to get back to where they need to be, but they're on their way."

Crosthwait says she is amazed at how many people have called and offered to help.

" We've had a lot of phone calls from people who are interested in trying to help out either with monetary donations or see if they can adopt or foster," said Crosthwait.

Veterinarians say it may take a while before the animals can be adopted, but it's good to know that people are willing to take them in.
