First, the grocery store, then, College Station ISD, and now prices will be going up for food at Bryan ISD.

Beginning this fall, school lunch prices are going up a quarter for all grades.

That means lunch will now cost $2.00 for elementary students and $2.25 for upper classmen. Breakfast prices will increase from $1.00 to $1.25.

Teachers and employees will see the biggest increase. Their lunch prices are going up 50 cents for lunch, raising the price from $2.50 to $3.00. Breakfast prices for staff will only increase 25 cents.

The last time the school increased prices was back in 2001. Rising food and gas costs are partially to blame for the price hike.

The increase will not affect students who receive free or reduced-price meals.

I teach in Bryan, and only one of my students pay for their lunch. This doesn't hurt the families, but the regular tax payer. 98% of students in our school don't pay for lunch anyways. Through the summer, breakfast and lunch is provided also. People need to come and see poverty first hand in our schools. It's actually right in your backyard!

YOU KNOW FOR ALLL OF YOU WHO ARE KNOCKING BISD SCHOOL LUNCHES,I CAN UNDERSTAND SOME OF THE SCHOOLS DON'T HAVE THE BEST EMPLOYEE'S AND THE ENDING RESULT IS THE FOOD TURNS OUT NASTY! OK BUT I CAN HONESTLY SAY THE SCHOOLS I WORK FOR, WE HAVE GOOD FOOD AND WE KEEP IT CLEAN N OUR KITCHEN. THAT'S PROBABLY WHY WE ALWAYS GET 100'S ON OUR HEALTH INSPECTIONS. SO TO SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE FOOD , SEND YOUR CHILD WITH A LUNCH.TRULY I THINK ALOT OF KIDS AREN'T USED TO EATING A COMPLETE MEAL AT HOME. THEY ARE PROBABLY USED TO EATING JUNK FOOD.THAT'S WHY THEY DON'T LIKE WHAT WE SERVE, BUT YOU KNOW YOU CAN'T GO ANYWHERE ELSE AND GET AN ENTREE,FRUIT,VEGGIES,AND A DRINK FOR $2.50 OR CAN U? WE WORK HARD AND I HOPE EVERY OTHER EMPLOYEE WORKS JUST AS HARD AS I DO TO KEEP OUR KIDS HEALTHY AND GIVE THEM AT LEAST ONE GOOD MEAL A DAY!! AS FOR FREE AND REDUCED MEALS, WHAT CAN WE DO? SOME PEOPLE DO NEED THE HELP, BUT YOU DO HAVE THISE THAT DO RIDE NEW CARS AND EAT OUT EVERYDAY.I DON'T UNDERSTAND!

I must admit that I was shocked that the price of the teachers' meals would increase so much when they get the exact same amount of food as the kids. At one school, the teachers are told that they get "free tea" with their meal, which the kids don't get. It seems that "free tea" is actually worth, what, 75 cents? The problem is, the teachers pay the same whether they take the tea or not. I'd like BISD to justify the price difference.

This country was not built on the idea of giving everyone a free ride, it was built on the idea that everyone should be afforded the same opportunities. Lunch prices probably would not be rising if everyone had to pay something. As it is, the majority pay to subsidize the 'free rides' of the minority. I think this is a symptom of the larger problem of a broken welfare system.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: bryan on May 9, 2008 at 09:46 AM
teachers do pay more for their lunches but they have not gone up in quite sometime for them...........I agree that the free lunches need to pay something..... let everyone equally pay for what they deserve and buy. Like people with foodstamps, some do need and work hard and still don't get enough to feed families. But there are those that you see are eating better than you when you go to grocery store, carry their expensive purses and drive nice cars. Okay? Where's your sign????

Lots of people have jobs they don't like and get paid far less than teachers. I think teachers deserve respect, as do all people. But seems to me that its a profession that you can go into and "never" be fired if you do a poor job. Because of this the rest of us that can, have little sympathy and don't want to hear about teacher complaints. The entire system needs an overhaul, but because common sense is required it will never happen. To all the great teachers, good job and thank you. To all those that are lazy and hide in the classrooms, and complain about the children and blame them or their parents for everything. You are apart of the problem. Sent 3 through these schools and there are some teachers that avoid parents and skip open houses. Fire those and give the good teachers free lunches and a pay raise.

IF YOU CAN'T PAY FOR YOUR LUNCH, THEN BRING IT!!!!! I AM SICK AND TIRED OR TIRED AND SICK OF ALL THE FREE HAND-OUTS.

Lonestar, only you would know that because your head is stuck in it.

Posted by: Elmer Williams Location: To Debbie on May 8, 2008 at 06:51 PM
Debbie I would agree with much of what you said. Unlike Tracy and Jenn, you opted to use logic and behave as an adult as opposed to whining about the everything under the sun. Yes, schools have changed since you started teaching in 1975. Schools also changed between the time I started teaching in 1946 and the time you started in 1975. Change is a fact of life. When I started we didn't have air conditioning. Textbooks were very difficult to come by. Most students were living in poverty and many had lost a father in Europe or the Pacific. We made do with what we had. We never complained and were happy to have a job. No we didn't have gang members in those days, but we had whooping cough, polio and the measles. I never knew or heard of a teacher ever being arrested for anything back in those days either. You sound like a level headed person. It is unfortunate that you have to work around so many immature adults. We can thank FDR and LBJ for failed social programs and free lunches.

Elmer, your colon is blocked.

Posted by: jay Location: bryan on May 8, 2008 at 09:43 AM
thats a shame the prices are going up.the food is not that great but stop and think theres kids out there that this is the only lunch they get to eat.but then most of the food is thrown away what a waste.

Posted by: Debbie Location: Bryan on May 8, 2008 at 07:55 AM
I can't believe Elmer. He must not have been in education in the last century. Teaching is not like it was when I first started in 1975. It is a whole different world. Parents don't care, so the students don't care. Take a walk down the hallway of a middle school or the high school between classes, Elmer. It is obvious you have not darkened the door of a modern day school. As for paying more for lunch, okay, if you get more food. I also agree that those that are on free and reduced meals should start sharing the load on this. Enough free stuff already.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 09:40 PM
It must be the food. Now I know why BISD had a 26 percent drop out rate. The food cost is to high. Quality of staff had nothing to do about.

Posted by: CITIZEN Location: BRYAN on May 7, 2008 at 06:30 PM
HAS ANYONE THOUGHT ABOUT CHARGING THE 25 CENTS TO THE PEOPLE THAT ARE GETTING FREE OR DISCOUNTED LUNCHES I SEE THAT THEY ARENT AFFECTED AT ALL?

Posted by: Jan Location: Bryan on May 7, 2008 at 05:35 PM
Thank you Elmer Williams for telling it like it is! As we can see from Tracy's comments she expects a free lunch. She thinks the taxpayers owe it to her. I don't owe her anything and neither does anyone else. If she does not like the food served in the school cafeteria she does not have to eat it. I bring a sack lunch to my office and eat at my desk. Unlike Tracy I work in a profession with demanding clients that keep me on my toes. I have more important things to concern myself with than my lunch. On a final note, Do you think the troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan eat as good as Tracy does in the school cafeteria? Probably not.

Posted by: Elmer Williams Location: To "Tracy" on May 7, 2008 at 03:22 PM
Tracy, I have been in your pasture and it is much greener than you make it out to be. You were probably not even born when I taught in the schools. Teaching changed from a profession to an occupation when the 30 and 40 somethings of the me generation sought refuge from the real world in the teachers lounge. Few things in life are more pathetic than adults that whine about their jobs. If you are discontent with your work environment you should consider behaving like an adult and seek employment elsewhere as opposed to whining. Whining is not going to solve anything. There is no shortage of qualified applicants to fill teacher vacancies in B/CS. A very significant number of area teachers have been arrested recently for having sexual relations with young children. Who wants to work around a bunch of pedophiles? That is why you have a few vacancies in your field. Grow up and stop your whining Tracy!

Posted by: Tracy Location: Bryan on May 7, 2008 at 11:56 AM
To Elmer and others who do not volunteer or work in education. Your ability to judge an educator and our profession from your chair amazes me. Instead of judging us why don't you volunteer and make a positive contribution to society. I would like you to work with poor pay, poor hours, and little to no assistance from the state to meet their expectations. I want you to be told to f... off and have to accept it from a 10 year old. I want you to call a parent about their child's academic performance and hear them tell you they don't care. There is a reason there is teacher shortage in Texas. That reason is the fact that people like you do not respect or support educators. Yes, we should get free lunches and the food we pay for is not by any means delicious. I am disturbed by your lack of empathy for a group of people who are working in an occupation that is trying to improve society.

Posted by: To Elmer Williams Location: BISD on May 7, 2008 at 08:21 AM
Elmer you hit the nail right on the head with that one. If the teachers were as proficient at educating children as they are at complaining we would have the best schools in the world.

Posted by: Kim Location: Bryan on May 6, 2008 at 10:14 PM
I can't believe the price is going up? In the elementary schools,,they consider mac a cheese a meal and to pay $.25 more for it is insane. What will be next? Report cards didn't even get mailed out this last 6 weeks to save on postage.....again,,,,what next?

Posted by: To Jenn Location: State Fair on May 6, 2008 at 08:15 PM
Jenn, who told you life is fair? A fare is what you pay to ride the bus. Don't like the cost of a school lunch? Brown bag it. Or better yet, walk to Taco Bell for a greasy burrito supreme. I wish my employer, or anyone else for that matter, would sell me a lunch for $3.00. Oh well, that's life and life isn't fair.

Posted by: Rc Location: Bryan on May 6, 2008 at 04:32 PM
Instead of raising prices lower the portions then you won't have so much waste because from what I have seen very few finish their plates.

Posted by: Elmer Williams Location: College Station on May 6, 2008 at 04:12 PM
Looks like our friends that teach in the public schools have found something else to whine about. A couple of weeks ago they were whining about the students and the parents. Before that the teachers in College Station were whining to the school board about their salaries. Now it seems they are whining about having to pay $3.00 for a lunch. If the truth be known you could give these teachers a free lunch and they would still whine about it. It would be to hot, too cold, too fattening, too healthy or too small of a portion. GROW UP PEOPLE!

Posted by: Anne on May 6, 2008 at 03:48 PM
Wow! Have you ever eaten at BISD? I went a few times to eat with my son at his elemetary school and then started sending him with a lunchbox. The lunches are atrocious, unhealthy, and MINIMAL.

Posted by: Jenn Location: CS on May 6, 2008 at 02:35 PM
Yes, teachers pay more for the same amount of food...that is not fair. Plus, if they can walk to taco bell during their lunch hour, so be it...teachers are adults.

Posted by: BISDAlum Location: Bryan on May 6, 2008 at 01:50 PM
The reality is that indirect expenses takes a toll on all (gas prices drive up food production costs). We need to keep in mind that BISD school cafeterias continue to have some of the highest rankings for cleaniness and sanitation for any public food establishment in Brazos County. In addition, their food is great and is still the best deal in town. Just today a non-nutritive, high calorie soft drink at a fast food restaurant cost me $1.89. At a BISD school, I can get a healthy meal that includes fruits, vegetables, lean meat and whole grain for only 36 cents more.

Posted by: Cecelia Location: Bryan on May 6, 2008 at 12:41 PM
They're going to have to make some big improvements in the food, utensils, etc. before anyone is going to want to pay that much for a meal. Think of how much food is thrown out already by kids who will not eat what is served (probably adults, too). Do they no longer get government subsidies for the school lunch program? I have only seen one school cafeteria in Texas that had decent food and that was at El Campo High School. Even people in town came to eat there. They could teach the rest of the U.S. how to cook and serve meals! I can see that we are going to be sending more peanut butter sandwiches for our student's lunch. He's a picky eater, and the decline in quality doesn't help to tempt kids to want to eat at school.

Posted by: student on May 6, 2008 at 10:12 AM
Do you know how many teachers walk across the street to Taco bell or subway? that aint fair to the students!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: student! on May 6, 2008 at 08:56 AM
this is why kids need off campus lunch! so that way they can choose! intead of being forced to eat greasy pizza and watery Macaronii! and fake butter! taco bell would be cheaper! and its alot better! they just want our money!....like they want money for ID's ($5) parking permits ($20) new planners ($15) thats all they want!

Posted by: Jason Location: Bryan on May 6, 2008 at 08:14 AM
I never had to worry about paying for lunch since I brought mine from home... But I feel sorry for those who do have to eat at ANY Bryan ISD school...

Posted by: Citizen Location: Bryan on May 6, 2008 at 08:08 AM
I could understand charging teachers more IF they got bigger portions. But teachers get the exact same amount of food as the students. Students get 4 steak fingers, teachers get 4 steak fingers. Students get one scoop of green beans, teachers get one scoop of green beans. You get the idea. Charging the teachers $1 more for the same exact amount of food seems unfair and unnecessary.

Posted by: Question Location: Bryan on May 5, 2008 at 08:47 PM
Will this affect teachers who get free or reduced-price meals? Oh, wait, teachers don't get those, do they?

Posted by: Teacher Location: Brazos Valley on May 5, 2008 at 08:43 PM
That's right!!!! Give those teachers a little raise and be sure you also raise their insurance and their lunch prices. That ought to keep them down where they belong, dern it!!

Posted by: Brian Location: Bryan on May 5, 2008 at 07:32 PM
The only thing better than having to eat the cardboard they call 'lunch' in the BISD would be overpaying for it! Yes, our dream has come true. Cost more / tastes less! Thanks BISD, eat your own food for a change (I dare you).
