An inmate who tried to elude local authorities throughout the day has been captured.

Authorities identify the escapee as Rafael Zamarron Cruz, 64, of Bryan (pictured below). According to the county's judicial website, he had been in jail since January 30 on a number of charges, including driving while intoxicated and driving with an invalid license.

Cruz was reportedly on a work detail at the Brazos County Exposition Complex, off of Leonard Road, when he fled.

"The officer was talking to some other inmates that were in his work crew and he just turned and walked away and was out the door and into the woods," Clyde Collins, Interim Chief of the Brazos County Sheriff's Department said.

Local authorities spent the day combing that area with dogs and officers on horseback, eventually finding the escapee.

"He could have just sat behind a bush and waited till dark, but the dogs moving caused him to move and that's what got him caught," Collins said.

Cruz has been in Brazos County Jail 14 times since 1986 according to the site. He is a native of Anagua, Mexico.

On April 30, Cruz had been sentenced to five years in prison for driving while intoxicated for a third time or more. He also was sentenced to five years for revocation of his probation on a prior DWI charge.

Brazos County Sheriff's officials say Cruz now faces felony escape charges. More charges could follow as a result of his escape. The sheriff's department also says it is investigating the day's events and reviewing its policy regarding work details.

Bryan ISD officials say Jane Long Middle School took precautions as a result of the escape. Spokeswoman Sandy Farris told News 3 that the exits at Long were locked, and students were being kept indoors.

More on this story tonight on News 3 and here at KBTX.com.

Hey, not many people can admit they made mistakes and then do something about it. Good for you. It's nice to hear something positive for a change.

Posted by: Drunk Driver Location: Convicted on May 10, 2008 at 04:47 PM
I was convicted of DWI on two different occasions back in the mid 80's. I would down a 12 pack of beer almost every night back in those days. I was not ill, I was just immature, irresponsible and dumb. Jail time is what made me wake up and realize it was time to change ways. My drinking these days consists of a single margarita on rare occasions with a meal at a Mexican restaurant. Nobody made this guy get drunk. Nobody made this guy drive after getting drunk. Like me, he made a series of bad choices and he needs to pay the price for those bad choices before he kills your family.

Posted by: I Agree Location: Bryan on May 10, 2008 at 11:51 AM
I agree with CS Girl - if alcoholism or suspected alcoholism was treated early on when a person gets their first DWI, do you think they would then get that many more? This guy obviously had a problem he couldn't control. And Anonymous, there is a big difference in rabid dogs and sick humans. And there is a difference in locking someone up and putting them to death as "Hillary" suggests. Someone needs to put her out of HER misery...

Posted by: Anonymous on May 9, 2008 at 05:35 PM
"obviously you are not aware that some people who drink and get DWIs are ill and need treatment, not punishment." Rabid dogs are also ill, but we don't let them run around loose biting people because they can't help it. This guy had 14 chances to either stop drinking or hand his keys over to a friend before he started drinking, but he didn't do it. And as far as woody is concerned, I wouldn't care whether he was an illegal minority alien or his daddy owned the world;s biggest hotel chain; I'd have locked Paris up till her hair turned grey...

Posted by: Woody Location: College Station on May 9, 2008 at 03:09 PM
If this guy had Blonde hair and light skin there would be one comment here saying all this for a DWI?

Posted by: BL Location: COLLEGE STATION TEXAS on May 8, 2008 at 10:54 PM
I have one comment! I would like to THANK ALL OF OUR LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT for the hard work, long hours, low pay, extra time away from their families and all of the other problems they deal with. May all of your shifts end with a smile and send you home safe to your families!

Posted by: Hillary Location: TO CS Girl on May 8, 2008 at 07:05 PM
TO CS Girl: I don't give a rats behind what a slime ball that is convicted of driving drunk thinks he needs. I care about 3 things. The victims of their crimes, the victims of their crimes and the victims of their crimes. I care about the children that have their parents stolen by drunks. I care about the widows that had their husbands stolen from them by drunks. I care about business partnerships that failed because a drunk took the life of one of the partners. I do not care about criminals or ignorant, liberal, do gooders, like you, that think they can save the world.

Posted by: CS Girl Location: College Station on May 8, 2008 at 04:35 PM
To Hillary: your comment "...This guy is the reason we need to have the death penalty for repeat DWI offenders." Surprised no one else commented on this - obviously you are not aware that some people who drink and get DWIs are ill and need treatment, not punishment. And your suggestion that they be put to death for this illness is preposterous. I hope your son or daughter never has this problem - you will change your tune real quick. What an ignorant comment to make!

To: JUSTME: I totally agree with you but you about the immigration matter but you will find that most people around here don't give a damn.

Posted by: anonomus Location: bryan on May 8, 2008 at 01:09 PM
No john he is a citizen he was illegal Way back when but not now

Posted by: Justme Location: Texas on May 8, 2008 at 12:07 PM
Ok, I can understand both sides of the issue here. But have ya'll ever stopped to think about the cost that is involved here, it cost every one of us when the illegals slip across the border and sign up for welfare or any other program they can. It also cost $$$ when they get in trouble and they get put in jail, it cost to feed, house and clothe them. I have a neighbor who has lived here for years, cannot understand very much english so you know that he is here illegally, and he and his wife have had 2 children while living here, and there was one time that I know he applied for help for paying for the birth of his child,...*AMERICAN taxpayers paid for the birth of his kids* I dont know what the answer to the immigration mess is. I know how it should be in a perfect world, but its not a perfect world! If things were *perfect* the aliens would apply for and gain citizenship BEFORE swiming the Rio Grande, and would get a JOB and get out of the citizens pocketbooks!

Posted by: Sam Location: Brazos County on May 8, 2008 at 11:08 AM
The Sheriff is doing a fine Job. This was not a violent offender and by using inmates it saves having to hire additional help and raising your taxes. As for convicted felons working outside the jail you should go by a TDC Unit who do you this is working outside there and there crimes are usually more serious than DWI.

>>>>As for deportation, this particular person HAS been deported in the past and he has returned as the majority of illegals do.<<<<< The related article says he was living here legally...is it wrong?

Posted by: Richard Location: Bryan on May 7, 2008 at 07:06 PM
Why is this person put on a work detail without leg restraints or some type of tracking device. Our judicial system at it's finest.

Posted by: Sick and Tired Location: Bryan on May 7, 2008 at 06:42 PM
How many of you who are complaining work in the criminal justice system? Probably none of you. When people are arrested, in more instances than not, it is for misdemeanor offenses. Bonds have to be set and there is a limit on how high they can go for misdemeanor cases. Unfortunately people have the right to bond out and they usually do. Regarding the SAFP comment, misdemeanor cases are not eligible for SAFP. Get your facts straight. You have to be ELIBIBLE for that option. As for deportation, this particular person HAS been deported in the past and he has returned as the majority of illegals do. They usually come back, especially if they have family here. I would love for those of you who bash the system come and spend a day and see how it actually works. Don't complain until you get your facts straight and you have walked a mile in your elected official's shoes!

Posted by: john Location: College Station on May 7, 2008 at 06:14 PM
>>>>>Will let me just say that it's funny how the news and cops made him out to be a monster but the real problem is the justice system <<<<< 14 times (not once or twice or ten times, but FOURTEEN) he has not only drunk a lot, but then gone out and run other people on the road, bounced off mailboxes, run down road signs, and YOU think that it's the justice system that has the problem???? I drink on occasion, but I also designate a driver or do it at home when I do, and if he had the sense to do the same, he'd have never been busted. On TV, I just heard that he is a Mexican citizen and his residence status has now been revoked, so he probably will be deported, but the fact that he hasn't been has nothing to do with the Sheriff; the folks urging everybody to vote probably need to ask our local judges and ex judges running for DA why this hasn't happened sooner...

I am so sick of hearing people say that we don't know what makes them do the things they do. If it had been a crime against you, personally, I doubt you would be defending them so much.

Posted by: Hillary Location: Toys Are Us on May 7, 2008 at 03:32 PM
Yes John, unfortunately the Texas DPS has in the past issued licenses to people that are not American citizens. It seems to me that I heard recently they were trying to get that changed. Perhaps I am wrong. This guy is the reason we need to have the death penalty for repeat DWI offenders.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Bryan on May 7, 2008 at 03:10 PM
I'm sorry but alot of you make it sound like he's a murderer but come on do you really think he wasn't looking for nobody to hurt or kill so he sounds like a drunk but it's all b-cuz he's in jail he's a bad person he drinks alot he's a bad person will in that case I guess what 95% of aggies are horrible cuz the drink like crazy and drive get locked up "O" wait they rich mommy's & daddy's to get them out. Will let me just say that it's funny how the news and cops made him out to be a monster but the real problem is the justice system I mean they say that the last time this happend was almost adecade ago yeah get real. I Know someone who escaped while being transported to the court house on 29th st. while being chained up yeah he was cought but I don't see them mentioning that!! Im not saying what he did was right but he has been cought and now is going to pay for it so give him a break so the next time you want to type a bunch of bull ask yourself whats really going on in the! system

Maybe we need to bring back the chain gang? One Deputy can not keep a eye on a six or eight person work detail working up and down the road. This is a Inmate classification problem at the SO.

Posted by: anonomus Location: tx on May 7, 2008 at 12:46 PM
He isn't illegal for your information JUAN don't just think of Money etc. think about the criminals to you don't know why they do the things they do so don't be going around staring stuff when you don't even know the real story

Posted by: john Location: College Station on May 7, 2008 at 12:39 PM
>>>>>This man should be sent back to his native home.<<<<<< His native home is probably Bryan; I've seen a number of comments CLAIMING that he is an illegal, but nothing in the article except that one of the charges was driving with an invalid (ie suspended, probably for DWI) license, and I find it hard to believe that Texas DPS would have issued a driver's license to an illegal alien, even in El Paso. And before you get too harsh on the Sheriff, do remember that you, the voters, set his budget in such a way that they HAVE to do some work release to make ends meet, and the alternative to using this guy might have been a murder suspect or pedophile...the real culprit here is the Prison system that hasn't picked him up between Febuary 1 and today, although I'm sure they're strapped too at all those mandatory sentences for folks caught with a little too much weed for personal consumption.

Posted by: bryan Location: bryan on May 7, 2008 at 12:21 PM
I don't think the Sheriff or any one else owes any one a apolligy for this. It happens every where in biger citys than this. just thank God for the law enforcement.

Posted by: Mad Now Location: College Station on May 7, 2008 at 12:04 PM
You are correct HOPE - there is always Safe P - people who have drug and alcohol problems should not be sent to prison - they get out with the same problems facing them - get them some therapy and help and rehabilitate them fully in a proper way and they won't do the same things again - punishing people for what is an illness (addition or alcoholism) is just wrong! Let's fix them!

You go, Juan! Thanks for saying what alot of us REAL AMERICANS are thinking!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 10:27 AM
This is too funny we concentrate on a old man who has drinking problem when we need to focus on more dangerous criminals.....

Posted by: Juan Location: Bryan on May 7, 2008 at 10:13 AM
To Denise, I have no problem with Hispanic people or any other group that is here legally. I am of Hispanic decent myself. What I do have a problem with is individuals that make a conscious decision to violate American law and enter this nation illegally. It is difficult to get a visa for a reason. We don't want every Tomas, Ricardo and Geraldo entering here if he does not have the ability to assimilate, learn English and support his family. Who do you think is going to have to pick up the tab for the medical bills when this drunken fool has a wreck? Who do you think picked up the tab for the stunt he pulled yesterday? Who do you think will pick up the tab for his prosecution and incarceration? It is time to go to the North side of Bryan and round up all the illegal aliens for deportation. We evacuated Berlin and New Orleans. North Bryan will be a cake walk.

This man should be sent back to his native home. That would put an end to Texans paying his way as he sits in jail time after time and not learning how to be productive here. Our great state certainly puts up with a lot from citizens that do not know how to abide by the law. In everything I think people deserve a second chance but as in baseball - three strikes and you're out!

well...if you live in BC and dont like it...MOVE!! this man may not be a hardcore killer but if hes drinking & driving then hes putting MANY people into danger!! what if you had your 2 year old son in the back seat & you were hit??? the officers thought they could trust someone to do a simple clean up...but the idiot ran! he should be sent back to Mexico..were he belongs! this county would be alot better if all the illegal immigrants would leave!! there the reason our officers have to put up with this!

I AM VERY OFFENDED BY SOME OF THE COMMENTS THAT HAVE BEEN PLACED HERE. WOULD IT HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT IF IT WAS A BLACK PERSON THAT HAD 14 ARREST WHAT WOULD OF BEEN THE COMMENT SEND THEM TO AFRICA OR IF IT WAS A WHITE PERSON WHAT WOULD OF BEEN THE COMMENT ON THAT. I AM A HISPANIC(LEGAL) HISPANIC BORN & RAISED IN TEXAS. HAVE U EVER WONDERED WHAT & HOW MUCH IT TAKES FOR AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT TO GET HIS VISA CARD? TAKE THAT TO ACCOUNT & WHAT THEY HAVE TO ENDURE WHILE THEY ARE HERE? ESPECIALLY FROM PEOPLE THAT ARE MORE CONCERNED ABOUT WHETHER U ARE ILLEGAL OR NOT. WHEN HAVE HISPANICS EVER BOMBED UR BUILDINGS IN FACT THEY RUN ALMOST EVERY RESTAURANT WHERE U GO AND EAT HAVE U EVER THOUGHT OF THAT. WHAT WOULD U EAT IF THERE WAS NO MORE HISPANICS WORKING THERE ANYMORE. IF THIS MAN IS ILLEGAL OR NOT HE IS PAYING THE PRICE FOR HIS CRIMES.

THERE IS A GREAT PROGRAM THAT IS STARTING TO BE GIVEN TO INMATES WHOM HAVE MULTIPLE OR A COUPLE OR EVEN ONE CHARGE HAVING TO DO WITH DRUGS OR DRINKING IT IS CALLED SAFE P IT HAS PROVEN VERY HELPFUL TO SOME IT IS AN INTENSE BOOT CAMP SELF FINDING BREAKDOWN OF ONE TO HELP REBUILD AN INDIVIDUAL TO BECOME A POSITIVE PART OF SOCIETY I KNOW SOMEONE THAT WENT AND HAVE SEEN DRASTIC CHANGES IN THEM I SAY THEY GIVE IT TO THIS MAN YOU NEVER KNOW HE MIGHT NEED IT AFTER ALL HE DOES NEED HELP!!! INSTEAD OF THROWING THESE GUYS IN PRISON WHERE THEY ARE NOT REHABILITATED AT ALL ONLY TO COME OUT AND REOFFEND TRY GIVING THESE GUYS WHAT THEY NEED AND THAT IS HELP!!

JMO Mr Kirk, but was a guy working on life in prison one offense at a time a real good prospect for a work detail?

Posted by: Ray Location: Bryan on May 6, 2008 at 10:27 PM
I have also written a letter to the sheriff about these issues and have not had a response.

Posted by: ray Location: bryan on May 6, 2008 at 10:23 PM
I was recently released from Brazos county detention center for a DWI. I was a trustee and was a part of work details. The amount of security was extremely minimal and very easily manipulated. People that were not allowed to be pulled as trustees (such as people with aggravated charges and ones facing hard jail time) were trustees. I actually was trying to press charges on an inmate for assault and nothing was done about it ...I feel there was a major injustice done here.

The Current Sheriff Runs a tight ship. You can bet that everything possible was done immediatly to catch this guy! In case you did not notice, he had every deputy plain cloths and in uniform in the woods and they were all covered in mud from head to toe!

I live on Leonard Rd and was out many times today with my 1 and a half year old wondering what was going on. It sure would have been nice if we were told somehow that there was a convict on the loose. Not sure how they would have let everyone know without panic, but there are many kids in my neighborhood and many were outside multiple times today. I just think we should have been told somehow.

LOOK AT HIS RECORD SUSPENDED DL, DWI'S, PUBLIC INTOXICATION. WHAT A REAL CRIMINAL!!!LOL. WHEN INMATES ARE IN JAIL THEY ARE GIVEN TRUST THAT IS WHY THEY ARE CALLED TRUSTEES. THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BEHAVE AND THAT IS WHY THEY GIVE ONE SUPERVISOR TO 6 PEOPLE. THESE ARE PEOPLE THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO WORK WHILE IN JAIL BUT ARE SUPPOSED TO ACT RIGHT. I was told this guy is an illegal alien. If that is in fact the case he should have been deported back in 1986. Apparently the Brazos County Sheriff's Office has failed to report illegal aliens in their custody to federal law enforcement. I will take this failure in to consideration at the ballot box.

Is it common in Brazos County for a convicted felon (The Eagle said he was convicted last week of felony DWI) to be out on a work crew, away from the jail? He was apparently awaiting transfer to prison from County jail. In other counties, convicted felons are not allowed to do trustee work out of the jail....what was the thinking here??

Jane Long may have been taken nessecary precaution at the time. However, children who walk home were allowed to leave the school unsupervised with some working parents unaware of escape inmate that's near by. Jane Long should have utilized their telephone messaging system to generate a call to inform all parents of the escape.

Posted by: Melina Location: Jane Long Middle on May 6, 2008 at 04:00 PM
I work at Jane Long. It's a personal curiosity how on earth did this escapee accomplish his escape????

Posted by: Jay Location: Bryan on May 6, 2008 at 03:58 PM
Mary Branch is closer to the Expo Center than Jane Long. Why would there be concern at that school?

Posted by: Jennifer Location: Bryan on May 6, 2008 at 03:54 PM
I work on Leonard road, just down from the Expo and I am by myself quit abit as I was this morining. I think they could have let those of us in the immeadiate area know a lot sooner than they did. My first clue something was wrong was the sheriff's cars curising slowly down the road. By that time I had been alone in the office for nearly two hours and we didn't get the phone call alert until 3:00PM. This guy may not be too dangerous, but is this how they are going to handle it next time? I hope not.

Posted by: Karen Location: College Station on May 6, 2008 at 03:19 PM
I heard from a friend with a business off Chick Lane (Leonard Rd) that he escaped from a work crew at the Expo Center. That is why Jane Long Middle School is concerned.

Right, a picture and name of the person would be useful information - they would get a lot more help in maybe locating the person if those who know him/her see the escapee....perfect strangers for that matter may recognize the escapee.....why even bother telling us about an escape if there is no other information. The Sheriff needs to give out a Photo. The current charges and past charges on this person. This person could be in for DWI or Murder. A danger to others are a walk off from a work detail. Sheriff Miller had a escape in 89or90 and would not give any information about it to other police dept. and to the pubic for many hrs. It took several days to get him back. Grimes County had a escape in the late 90s and gave information out and had a person in for murder back in jail in HRS. After the KBTX put the Information on TV. The person was in my barn. Lets hope this is not the policy of the current Sheriff.

Hope that we don't have any ignorant comments about law enforcement people and KBTX.

"News three has learned that an inmate has escaped from Brazos County." So there is no need to worry for those living in Brazos County as the inmate has apparently escaped and is no longer in Brazos County ?
