Aggie Jason Castro belted out a couple of classics Tuesday night as it was Songs that Shaped Rock & Roll week on American Idol.
Castro sung Bob Marley's "I shot the Sheriff" and Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man."

During the second song, Castro forgot some of the words and judge Simon Cowell told him to start packing his bags.

It was announced earlier this week that if Jason lands a spot in the final three, he will perform on the steps of the Administration Building on campus. This is something uniting fans all across campus and in the Bryan/College Station area to make sure Castro survives another week.

You could call it Castro-mania. There's a certain excitement that can't be denied each time Jason Castro hits the airwaves.

"It's kind of weird because we've talked about American Idol before, but we haven't had this type of fanatical fan base that he kind of seems to generate," Candy 95's Morning deejay Frito said.

"We had a mom that called in and said she has two cell phones she dials in on, plus her home phone. Plus, her daughters are working something online where they're voting. So we've had a lot of callers let us know how important this is for them," fellow Candy 95 deejay Alli added.

The calls from Jason's fans just keep pouring in at the local radio station, so much so that along the way Frito and Alli have become faithful fans themselves.

"Last week, I think I got up to 570 votes. That was from calling in for an hour and texting for an hour," Alli said.

The Aggie favorite is known for his unique voice and daring dreads. But it's his laid back charm that seems to really be capturing the hearts and attention of many voters.

"I think Jason Castro embodies the niceness and the wonderful A&M spirit we have," A&M student Lea Leveringon said.

"I love his style, the guitar. When he sang Hallelujah, it was just amazing. I loved it," fellow student Jonathan Bailey said.

There's definitely no doubt that Aggieland Outfitters loves Jason Castro as well. Since Jason landed in the final four, the store has created shirts in support of the Aggie idol. The store says the shirts have been flying off the shelves.

"The top three is really big, and with the possibility of him coming here to Aggieland, it's really exciting. So more and more people are rushing in asking for the shirt," Kendra Brinkley with the store said.

Many think it's that A&M spirit that will land Castro and his fans the ultimate gig -- or in this case gig'em: performing at his alma mater.

"Jason we're all rooting for you, hoping you make us proud. Gig'em," Travis Robinson said.

American Idol airs at 7 p.m. Tuesday on FOX.

Am I the only one that thinks Jason Castro is an idiot, and an embarrassment to the level of student intellect at Texas A&M? When I attended A&M in the 80's, it was a challenging academic university, and I can't remember anyone as doped up as Castro making it past freshman year. He seems like a nice guy and all- probably a lot of fun at party's, but I wouldn't go around telling anyone that he is a student at the University that I graduated from.

Well, it was no real surprise. Castro got the boot which he deserved.

Oh, poor Jason. So VERY horrible! How dare he mess up Bob Dylan!! That right there should make him leave. I watch b/c I like David Cook. I can't believe Brooke left so we could watch Jason be an idiot. oh well. Guess vote for the worst does work!

Yes Jason messed up last night but recovered very well. No one is perfect not even the best of the best singers. Give him a break he's an awesome singer and has my support 100%. I hope every Aggie voted for him last night...I know I did over 250 times! Can't wait to see him in AGGIELAND!!! :)

There sure are some people on here that continuously keep posting negative comments about Jason Castro. Do you realize that you're spending your time & energy on someone that you say you dislike? You must have lots of spare time! If you don't like him so much, then quit reading the stories about him & quit watching the show. And when he's in College Station tomorrow, just don't go! You'll just be missing out :)

I think American Idol will be glad when he's voted off. He stinks!! I'm all for the best man winning however Castro just aint it. I also feel like people vote for the worst singer just to see if they win. Stop voting for someone that will never make it.

Posted by: fact Location: cs on May 7, 2008 at 09:40 AM
American Idol will not let him win on popular votes, thats not what they stand for. They are looking for talent, he aint got it.

"Moron Out". I LOVE it!!! LOL!

Jason had a bad night.. but I am still a huge fan! Debbie from Somerville if you don't like Jason why do you waste your time reading about him and taking the time to post messages. I have seen you negative comments before. Don't you have better things to do?

Posted by: Debbie Location: Somerville on May 6, 2008 at 11:30 PM
Please after tonight tell me no Aggie is going to vote for him. Listen to Simon, pack his bags. He stinks and there is real talent in the other 3. If you vote to keep him is is a disgrace to MORON OUT (A&M). If you like him so much let him sing to you folks but give real talent a chance to get what they have earned!!!!!

Posted by: Brennan Location: TAMU on May 6, 2008 at 10:59 PM
I voted 32 times in the 2 hour period on tuesday nite (may 6th)

Posted by: Kyle Location: Bryan on May 6, 2008 at 10:19 PM
After tonight, the odds of Castro surviving tomorrow's vote are somewhere between slim and none.

Posted by: Oops! Location: Bryan on May 6, 2008 at 08:18 PM
Jason is going to need lots of luck after his not so good singing and forgetting the words tonight (Tuesday). He is very talented and I just hope he can pull this off! Vote!!!!!

Wrong. I don't have Castro mania. I wish Castro would get a haircut. I wonder if he washes those things? Yuck! I bet they stink!
