Good news for owners of a Bryan lingerie and novelty shop.

Wednesday evening, the Bryan Zoning Board upheld the store's appeal and will allow it to stay open.

Just days after the store opened in March, the city of Bryan decided Cindie's was an adult entertainment store. City employees said Cindies's violated zoning laws since the shopping center where the store is located is zoned for retail businesses, and not adult entertainment.

During Wednesday night's hearing, city employees admitted that no one from the city ever asked Cindie's what kind of merchandize the store would display, before Cindie's opened.

Employees also said no one from the city's planning or building departments visited the chain's other locations before granting the permit.

"This body would not have had to look at this particular situation and spend a lot of time and effort to go through this if the proper things had been done up front," said Scott Hickle, a zoning board member.

Hickle also indicated the ordinance governing adult establishments is not clear.

The city ordinance states that an adult entertainment business is one where a substantial portion of the store is adult oriented, but ordinance does not define substantial.

I shop in Cindies last Fri. I looked for myself. Two men with wife's and 10 women in the 20,s and up to 50 years old shopping. It looked like college girls and a old couples. The Bryan sleazy does not shop here. A much nicer class of people is shopping in this store then Bryan has had in a Long time. Real sex toys are on the N.West side of Bryan near the Gang bangs that are Shooting with each other and The Police. No city meeting need on the Crime. We need to keep Bryan the same. To may people with jobs, legal income and education will hurt the city image.

Sherry you must not have been in Cindie's yet. They do NOT have movies for rent. No one under the age of 18 is permittied in the isolated room that has videos for sell only in it. Cindie's does a great job of making sure children are not exposed to material that would be offensive to them. Children are not even allowed in Cindies without their parents. Not because this is the law, but because Cindie's wants to be a respected store in the community.

GOOD GRIEF PEOPLE. THIS IS A STORE THAT SELLS LINGERIE AND ADULT ITEMS. IT IS NOT, I REPEAT, IT IS NOT A STRIP JOINT, SLUT HOUSE, OR BROTHEL. IF YOU WANT TO SEE THE ABOVE MENTIONED ACTIVITIES, VISIT YOUR LOCAL SCHOOLS ON ANY GIVEN DAY. LOCAL BUSINESS PEOPLE WONDER WHY OUR TAX DOLLARS ARE SPENT IN OTHER CITIES-- MAYBE OTHER CITIES DON'T WORRY ABOUT SUCH TRIVIAL THINGS. HOW ABOUT OUR CONSTITUTION; ISN'T IT BASED ON FREEDOM!!

We have been needing a place like this for a long time. Welcome Cindies.

I am 84 years old and have absolutely, positively no plans whatsoever to patronize this establishment. However, it is none of my business, or anyone else's for that matter, what consenting adults do behind closed doors in the privacy of their homes. I wish the owners of Cindie's all the best and I hope the returns on your investment are immense.

Bryan city hall have a meeting on something important. Bryan EMS was trying to get some body armor after some bad incidents a few years ago and had no money for the bullet proof vests.I hope it did not take 2yr to get the vests. Have a meeting on this and use the new tax money from a new business. Things are just starting to come back in Bryan and now this. We need new business, Tax money and new people in the city shopping. To many people in the past have ran from Brayn like the crossed the DMZ,After passing University Dr. With the new business and cash coming into Bryan we have a chance to work on real city problems.

I had a service business down the road. Not open to the public. I have had more then 6-break-ins in 4Yrs the PD also never arrested anyone. But the POlice are very likable and professional and under staffed. The Police advised us that we would likely be robbed in time and to be careful. After 2 police shootings in the area. A armed hostage situation at a resturant. A day time shooting at a car wash. A armed robbery across the street from the car wash a week before. And a suspected drug dealer taken a gun from 1 of 3 police Officers In a fight with Police and pointed at the Police officers and running off with the gun. We acted. I Feel the Professional advice from the Police was needed and saved us money. We moved to College Station. Maybe a meeting on hiring some more police keeping them on the job and getting tax money in the city would help. But the city does have time for a meeting on a new store to see if they are going to close it.4yrs later Bus. are back and the city may close them.

Welcome to the area. I am a customer and will continue to be. Saves me a trip to Austin.

I happen to run a business right down from Cindie's as well and have had one break in during the 5 years I have been there. The police officers that worked the case were all very friendly and professional. Don't run a sleazy business and expect not to have sleaze in your establishment. If Cindie's is run professionaly then they will have no problems with their guests or break-ins. There was no need to use this article to vent on the mishaps of you business venture.

In a healthy, commited relationship, sexual intimacy is a gift. While some of the items in the store may not be as tasteful as others, the items are available to enhance intimacy. I don't see the problem here......

You would think Bryan drug heads and prostitutes and gang bangers are going to shop at this store, and the city was going to Hell if the store is not put out of business. How about a meeting on the real Crime and Sleaze Problems in the City. The killings Robberies, shootings, gang hits, open prostitution, drug dealers and poor Police service. I had a business down the road and had it broken into many times. Prostitutes and drug dealers running around everyday. A person died on Texas ave in back of the trash can. I lost count on the number of Police chiefs and city MGRs But, We do have time for a meeting about a new upscale store in a new shopping center. Cindies welcome to Bryan get a video system, Hold up alarm and a gun. I needed them for my Business and learned this the hard way. From A Bryan Business with crime Victim experience and no City meetings experience.

"There are people walking around town that wear what the ladies that work there wear and nobody is crying foul and wanting a public dress code. Grow up people and worry about real issues like homeless people, drugs and violent crime..." A public dress code? Great idea! I'm all for it. And what exactly are YOU doing about the "real" problems around here? Probably just talking about them.

What about Woody's, is it not in Bryan

Posted by: Sandra Location: CS on May 8, 2008 at 03:47 PM
Why is this such a big deal? Are you telling me that B/CS lives in such a bubble that none of our leaders, thier spouses, or the citizens are using the products of an industy that generates tens of billions of dollars each year!!?? Many people (yes, in the Brazos Valley, too) purchase adult items and used them (gasp!) within our city limits...I know me and my husband of 18 years have [and hopefully will contintue to do so...if I'm lucky ;) ]

Posted by: Phil Location: cs on May 8, 2008 at 03:27 PM
I'm surprised they didn't call the S.W.A.T. team out!!! Um.... it's 2008. Get a grip people.

Thank you to our volunteers on the planning and zoning board that serves our community. They had a decision to execute and properly represented the city ordinances. The best way to achieve the goals of the community is to become active in the community.

Has anyone checked out the type of movies that are available for rent to the public in a back room...Are these available to our teens also....

I second, third, and fourth the many questions about what is truly going on with the leadership of the city of Bryan. If this is representative of their decisions regarding businesses, what other poor decisions are being made behind closed doors that citizens don't know about? Makes you wonder if many of the rumors regarding about their choices are true after all. I say Welcome to Bryan, Cindies! Hopefully your experience from now on will be a much better one than it has been so far.

I beleive you should visit this store before making any kind of judgement. They have nothing differernt then Spencer's and Victoria's Secret (Which are found in a MALL where ton's of kids can also be found). They are in a small shopping center towards the end with nothing that is built to attrack kids around them. Hooters is approved to be built almost directly in front of where Cindie's is. So let me get this right.... some people in BCS would rather have females in low cut tops, booty shorts with cheeks hanging out, serving drinks... Then to have a very clean, open, female friendly store who sales the same items you can buy in the Mall or at HEB (yes HEB has Lube's and Condoms!) Sometimes I wonder if people even look into things before judging. I am glad Cindie's is here to stay!!

Posted by: jen Location: bryan on May 8, 2008 at 10:36 AM
if you dont like it then dont go to it..simple as that. quit complaining. not every store in bryan/college station is going to be built for you. If you dont like cindies then simply ignore it. bottom line.

Posted by: Jason Location: Bryan on May 8, 2008 at 10:02 AM
Victoria, do your homework. Hooters is still coming to that location. The construction was put on hold due to rising construction costs. The company has stated they will begin construction once they complete the other locations they are working on right now. Hooters is not as bad as people think. There are people walking around town that wear what the ladies that work there wear and nobody is crying foul and wanting a public dress code. Grow up people and worry about real issues like homeless people, drugs and violent crime, not what adults choose to do behind close doors or frosted glass. Focusing on petty things and not real issues is why society is in the shape it is in today. The number of 13-18 yr old girls that are pregnant in our schools should be enough evidence that children have been exposed to sex well before Cindies came to town. The whole problem is that this business came to a white middle class neighborhood. Where was the fuss when Woody's showed up?

Posted by: David Location: College Station on May 8, 2008 at 09:54 AM
A classic example of wanting all the "good" that comes with growth but none of the bad or should I say less desirable businesses. Welcome to town Cindies.

Posted by: Hosea Location: Bryan on May 8, 2008 at 09:21 AM
Cindie's is a very nice store in a nice neighborhood. I do not see how people can judge the store without taking the time to go in and see what the store is all about. It is a store that has a lot of class and caters to women. The owner did a great job of choosing a location and building a top of the line store. I am glad Cindie's is going to be around.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 8, 2008 at 09:15 AM
While I do not condone the presence of this "shop" at all, I cannot believe the haphazard way in which the city handled it in the first place.

Posted by: Oh goodness Location: TX on May 8, 2008 at 09:13 AM
It is a lingerie shop. I would hope that only adults are going in there anyway. I mean, no 15 year old needs to be buying that anyway. And no one complains about the Victoria’s Secret? How is it any different? I was in that a few weeks ago and a mom was buying her (maybe) 13 year old some VERY “naughty” underwear. And as far as any sort of “toys” that are in there (Cindie’s), you know it is designed for people who shop there. i.e. ADULTS. So just let them be. It is not the stores fault that Bryan didn’t do their homework. All you have to do it Google it…

Posted by: Barney Location: Bryan on May 8, 2008 at 09:03 AM
Congrats to Cindie's..... I hope you do well in the area. This town needs a little spice in it. And I'm not talkin about mexican food either. Although I love the stuff.

Posted by: Sounds fishy Location: Bryan on May 8, 2008 at 09:01 AM
Sounds like to me that Bryan is so very desparate to have new business that they will allow ANYTHING in. Such a pity that Bryan has allowed that to happen. Sounds like everyone should remember this come elections!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 8, 2008 at 08:40 AM
Good for Cindie's, there is nothing wrong with what goes on at that store. However, it bothers me that the city was inept and didn't show and due diligence doing a background check on a business when approving a new store, no matter what the store is. The law should also be updated to make it less subjective.

Posted by: Victoria Location: College Station on May 8, 2008 at 07:28 AM
Alot is wrong with this picture. If you will remember Hooters had planned to build in that same area, and Bryan was going to let them do it, until the citizens raised a lot of objections.

Posted by: Debbie Location: Bryan on May 8, 2008 at 05:59 AM
My Bryan business and many other local businesses in town have to jump through hoops before getting the city's approval to make any positive physical changes to our businesses, including spending thousands of dollars to grow more trees and plants, add more sidewalks and parking spaces, and following the City's rules. Then a chain adult store moves into a nice Bryan neighborhood, slipping through the cracks, due to incompetence. What is wrong with this picture?
