It happened just after 12:30 a.m. on Augustine Court in College Station.

It's typically a quiet neighborhood where you can often hear the birds chirp and the wind blow.

But Tuesday morning as a College Station man pulled into his driveway, that serenity was broken with the sound of gunfire.

"A vehicle pulled up beside him in a pick-up truck with two black males in it. They asked him a question about directions, and he told him he didn't know," Rhonda Seaton with the College Station Police Department said. "At that point they shot him in the head and fled with his money."

Police say this instance of aggravated robbery appears to be a random act. That means it's not something that would normally occur in this neighborhood.

"It's frightening, it is," Katie Williams said.

Williams says the early morning events have left her a little bit shaken.

"I'm a single woman, so it's pretty scary," Williams said.

But across the street it's a different story.

At the Harris home they say they still feel safe.

"We've been here 35 years and this is a wonderful neighborhood and we'll keep it that way," Ed Harris said.

One reason Harris says he's not living in fear right now is because of his pint-sized protection.

"That's a our guard dog, that's one reason we feel strongly safe, safer I should say," Harris said.

Police say they're trying to find the two men, to keep people feeling safe in this neighborhood.

"We're kind of stuck at ground zero, and are really trying to collect all the information we can," Seaton said.

News Three spoke with the victim Tuesday morning, who had just been released from the hospital. He told News Three that he is grateful to be alive.

The victim says after he was shot he made two calls. One to 911, and one to his daughter to let her know what happened, since he wasn't sure how severe his injuries were.

Fortunately, he survived and will live to call his daughter again.

College Station Police are still looking for the two men who were involved in the shooting and robbery.

The suspects are described as two black males. One with a medium build, the other with a heavy build. They were last seen wearing dark colored shirts, and driving away in a dark extended cab pick-up truck.

If you have any information you're asked to call College Station Police at 764-3600.

Ultimately the responsibility for my personal safety rests with me. I wear a seat belt, have a fire extinguisher, a smoke detector and a firearm or two. The police and firefighters are wonderful people with the best of intentions, however they can not be everywhere all the time. Alarm systems, dogs, pepper spray, stun guns and neighborhood watch programs are all fine and dandy for feel safe measures however, there is nothing that says keep away like the sound of a pump shotgun chambering a round. High capacity semiautomatic pistols made by reputable manufacturers such as Glock, Sig Sauer and Smith and Wesson make fine additions to your personal security plan. Many people are idealistic and deny the fact we live in a violent world full of predators that would love nothing more than to rape, rob and murder people that have worked hard all their lives. I am not an idealist, I am a realist and opt to go armed every time I step out. Like American Express. Don't leave home without it.

That's a nice neighborhood, but not far from it you have those sleazy Deaux Chene apartments as well as a few other run down complexes. It is sad because back in the 70's the Deaux Chene apartments were the nicest in town. If I was a gambler I would place my money on the shooter either living in those apartments or visiting a resident of those apartments. Those complexes are an eyesore. Every type of thug known to man kind lives over there. You can drive by there in the middle of the day and see large numbers of able bodied adult men that should be at work playing basketball or standing around. With the unemployment rate at 3.5% they could easily find a job. They have to be supporting themselves through drug sales, robbery, burglary or who knows what. Thank God the victim wasn't killed.

Dear Suspicious: I agree. The shooter probably had enough of the victim's barking dog.

I am sorry, and I only hope for the best for the man who was shot, but doesn't anyone, besides me, think this whole story is just a little bit suspicious? Yes, it could be a random act of violence, but I am just wondering if there could be more to this story.

I didn't think my last comment i made would be posted. I'm MAD as HELLO about all of these crimes! Maybe when these punks are caught they can split a 10 year probation! Ring a bell?

If someone is going after you the police can not get to you in time. You have to make a decision if you are going to be a victim are fight back. A past victim that fights back now. Firearm and CHL. I do carry a gun now. I have used it in college Station to stop a person from robbing my wife and I. No shots fired. CSPD made the arrest. The Police looked to be surprised that I stopped him. It turned out that the person was into drugs and had a past criminal record include assault on the police. Anyone think of buying a gun need to make sure the are trained to use it. Contact a gun range for a NRA certified instructor. He have some x-cops NRA Instructor in the area.

If someone is arrested I hope he does not get Probation from a jury, Brazos county does not need a jury like last week. Probation for Murder.

It happened "on Augustine Ct." is not accurate. It happened in the driveway on SOUTHWOOD. This is the only house on the block that has a driveway on Southwood- a much more opportunistic street. This portion of the street is surrounded by apartments and not close to neighbors.

I'm getting a gun. So, watch out crooks. You'll be dead if you mess with me. I'm going to shoot first, then I'll ask the questions. That's funny - they don't respond! LOL! They're dead!

I'm not trying to argue with you, john, seriously. I have a golden retriever and he's huge but I always think that if someone wants to do you harm and they have a firearm, wouldn't they just shoot the dog first? I'm not suggesting I would carry a gun in public but I do have a right to defend my home. I'd hate to kill another human being but if they were threatening my family's lives, I would do it in a heartbeat. But that's just me.

>>>>Crime is everywhere and like JustMe in College Station, we need to start fighting back.<<<<< And fignting back doesn't HAVE to involve a firearm; security cameras are getting cheaper, mount one covering the street and have your pc just get a pic every minute or so; if you're neighbor finds his gas can missing, you can go back through and at least get a general description. And get a dog and train it; if you're scared of pits and rots and dobes, even a lab or shepherd or pointer looks intimidating enough to make most burglers go elsewhere.

I am shocked that the 'choking' game- dumb kids choosing to do this on their own should NOT have made the top news over a local man getting shot in the face!! What kind of reporting is this??? I think covering the choking game is important ( I have teens of my own) but not top priorty of two 'would be' murderers on the loose. Does KBTX get that?? Two men tried to kill this man for his money..It could happen to any of us with these two on the loose.. You would think that KBTX would spend just a little bit more time on their commentary..Sickening..

I've lived here 10 yrs and the crime rate seems to have gone up dramatically off southwest pkwy. I live off that street...and I am locking my doors all the time now. I do not feel safe.

I agree with Billy Bob. I live in the country and crime is rampant out here. We moved out here years ago thinking it had to be safer than town but we were wrong. Crime is everywhere and like JustMe in College Station, we need to start fighting back. While I don't have all the answers for that one, a deputy told me one time I had the right to shoot someone if they were INSIDE my home. What would have happened in THIS situation? If the guy had fought back and ended up shooting one of the "bad guys" would he have gotten into trouble because they were outside his home? Anyone have any idea? I'm curious about that. I'm so glad the guy is okay. I really can't believe he survived that so that's pretty amazing.

SOMEBODY OUT THEIR DIME THESE LOW PEOPLE OUT SO THAT THEY CAN BE PUT IN JAIL OR BETTER YET LET SOME ONE SHOOT THEM IN THE FACE ....IF YOU NEED MONEY DO WHAT THE REST OF US DO GET A JOB AND EARN IT PUNKS........

Posted by: JustMe Location: College Station on May 13, 2008 at 09:55 PM
The police are already doing all they can. They can't be everywhere at once. The only thing we can do is to is get a permit to carry a weapon and start fighting back. I have no qualms about shooting a thug if he pulls up in my driveway and comes at me and my family with a gun. Maybe if we start fighting back, they will go somewhere else. If we let them scare us half to death, then they will continue to be brazen and stupid in OUR town! The police don't want us to arm ourselves, but we're going to have to. It's just robberies now, but soon, once they get all proud and haughty, the murder rate will rise.

This was in the Southwest parkway area, sort of near Bee Creek. The bullet hit his face, and the doctor said it was a miracle, because only one in million survive a foot range shot to the head. I know this person very very well.

Totally agree with the CHL post. Sadly, the only way to avoid being a victim is to turn the tables on the criminal.

This is a random act of violence....i wonder why so many feel that college station or THEIR neighborhood is somehow immune to these random acts. They will keep happening as long as this city continues to grow and economic statuses of peoples change...No where is safe. No where, which is why we must all remain vigilant where ever we reside....Hurricane Katrina has nothing to do with this, maybe thats a convenient justification for some who have embarrassing biases towards certain groups in this "culture"....Stay vigilant....im just a hermit from outside of Hearne...my knowledge is lacking...

>>>>>> college station needs to patrol these areas more often not saying they aren't already doing a great job but simply that they could patrol this area more often<<<<<< That's what chief Clancy told the city manager about a year and a half ago, and you see where that got HIM.

Posted by: Nathan H. Location: College Station on May 13, 2008 at 05:44 PM
Wow...this boggles my mind. Why shoot the man in the face, for crying out loud?!? I'm speechless.

Posted by: jerry Location: college station on May 13, 2008 at 05:05 PM
Just another clear example of these "characters, thugs or whovever" they are in this culture that absolutely have nothing else to do but to do harm to mankind. What will it take to put an end to this ?? Where do they learn this from ? Fine-outstanding citizens-hardly not !!

CRIME IS CRIME RATHER IT COMES FROM OUTSIDERS OR INSIDERS, IT SHOULD BE STOPPED, I HAVE A 3YR OLD DAUGHTER AND I'M TERRIFIED TO EVEN LET HER OUT MY SIGHT. ALL WE CAN DO IS PRAY AND ASK GOD TO PROTECT USE FROM THE DANGERS IN THE WORLD.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 13, 2008 at 04:22 PM
Does anyone know what neighborhood this is?

Posted by: Anonymous Location: BCS on May 13, 2008 at 03:42 PM
People GET a GUN and CHL crime is not just for Bryan any longer. The crossed over into CS-From Bryan and are having a field day. I think ever Motel on UNIV. has been robbed in the last few years since the Hurricanes. I was also robbed and lucky I had a gun. The Police can not get to you in time if things go bad. It does not matter if you live in CS or Bryan. The news only covers a small part of the robberies in BCS. My business robberies do not get covered. One of may friend store was armed robbed 3x in Dec 07 in Bryan, no news reports also. The Avg person walking the street of BCS have no idea that CSPD reported 33 robbers UPD 1 sheriff 3 and a BPD 100 robbery to DPS web site in 2006. The Sheriff cleared 100% CSPD 55% BPD 41% UPD 100% as reported to DPS from the PDS.

i live right around the corner this is alarming some of the individuals in college station are acting so crazy, college station needs to patrol these areas more often not saying they aren't already doing a great job but simply that they could patrol this area more often about two weeks ago the cars on our entire street got broken in to this area needs to be closly watch i believe

THIS A CRYING SHAME. PEOPLE THESE DAYS CANT BE THAT DESPERATE. WELL I HOPE THEY GET THOSE GUYS AND SEND THEM UP FOR A LONG TIME. NO ONE SHOULD BE SCARED TO GET OUT A VEHICLE AT THEIR HOME. I WORK FOR AN APARTMENT COMPLEX AND WE PRIDE OURSELVES THAT WE HAVE SAFE NEIGHBORHOODS AND THAT WE TRY TO STOP ALL EXTRA TRAFFIC, JUST FOR THIS REASON. THIS IS A SAD SITUATION AND FOR THE HUMAN DOGS THAT DID THIS I THINK THEY SHOULD BE DONE THE SAME WAY.

I think that was a very bad thing.

Where are we safe anymore? :-(

Posted by: DB Location: Bryan on May 13, 2008 at 02:31 PM
I am sorry but ever since Katrina it seems that there has been alot more crime in the twin cities! I know that the crime rate was bad before but come on now this is getting out of hand! I am lost for words!! Just think this man was minding his own business and these thugs just pull up and shoot him in the face!! Are we going to have to pay more tax money to get more law inforcement just because we wanted to help people when they were in a time of need and they come to our town and start messing things up the way they did in Louisianna??? And I know that not all the victims from Katrina are bad..There are some good but we need to really think of our College Town and how this is going to effect us!
