Brazos County Burn Ban Lifted
Brazos County commissioners voted to lift the burn ban Tuesday despite opposition from local firefighters. Monday, Robertson County did the same, but some lawmakers there may regret their decision.

"It was a bad decision and I take the whole credit for that, because I suggested it to the court," Robertson County Judge Fred Elliott said.
A day after the burn ban was lifted in Robertson County, volunteer firefighters are back to business. After battling a seven-acre grass fire started by a boy burning trash, crews left the area still smoldering, rushing to a destructive house fire down the road.
"It’s something right now that's pretty difficult," Robertson County Emergency Manager Jerry Henry said. "We're going to have to put our tennis shoes back on if we're going to catch up with these fires."
The same day Brazos County Commissioners decided to lift the burn ban, the reason they say the conditions have improved.
"I think it's dry enough and we're expecting a little bit more rain at the end of the week," Brazos County Judge Randy Sims said.
Area firefighters disagree; they opposed the lift and think their job won't get any easier.
"Realistically the rain we've had has done very little with our fire danger," Joe Ondrasek with Brazos County Precinct 4 said. "The ground is wet but that gives these people a false sense of security."
In Robertson County two grass fires broke out just hours after the ban was lifted, not including this house fire. All signs this burn ban lift may be short lived.
"I have no doubt that if this continues it will be," Judge Elliot said.
Brazos County will list the burn ban on every meeting agenda, meaning it could be reinstated next week.
Judge Elliott called and said a meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday morning at 10 am at the Robertson County Courthouse to reinstate the burn ban.
As for the house fire a cause is still under investigation. Fire officials believe it did start inside the house.
