BRYAN The Bryan City Council approved a measure to write off more than $1.6 million dollars in unpaid ambulance bills Tuesday.
The write-off represents 41% of the total amount billed to patients in the 2011 fiscal year.
Bryan firefighters say uninsured patients are the reason for most of the unpaid ambulance rides. There are also required medicare and medicaid write-offs.
Officials say a substantial number of patients don't pay ambulance fees every year, which is why the city sets aside money to cover the unpaid bills.
The highest write off was in 2009 when the city covered 46% of the total amount billed for the year.
