A local Aggie is making a name for himself by making sandwiches. Michael Carranza works hard for the money.

This full-time student balances, school, subs, and even volunteering his services at a local hospital all in hopes of one day becoming a physical therapist.

"But, this is the only job I get paid at," Carranza said.

Michael makes the most of it, by making it fun. He's developed a skill that's gaining attention.

"I was pretty slow at first, and then after about a year I got fast," Carranza said.

Real fast. In fact he's so swift that his customers refer to him as the speediest sub-maker around.
And it's much more than just a nickname.

"We had an in town competition and out of all of the competitors I got the fastest time by ten seconds, so they're sending me to Vegas," Carranza said.

Michael will get to put his need for speed to test. Competing with twenty people across the nation, for the title of "The World's Fastest Sandwich Artist."

Last year's winner clocked in with a time of 44.9 seconds. Michael's best time to date is 44 seconds.

We wanted to see Michael make his swift signature sub in action, to see if he could surpass his old record.

"Turkey on whatever bread you pick, no cheese, all the vegetables, no jalapenos, no spinach, oil and salt and pepper," Carranza said.

This time, Michael clocks in at 43 seconds, a new personal record.

Something Michael hopes he can repeat in Las Vegas, because the grand prize of $3,000 could open more doors for him in the future.

"Oh it could help pay off my debt," Carranza said. "I've been practicing real hard just for that."

Michael will be competing July 22-25 in Las Vegas. Prizes for the event range from $1,000 to $3,000.
