Is Bryan/College Station getting a fair shake when it comes to gas prices?

As we promised, we are continuing to look into what's making gas prices in Bryan/College Station more expensive than elsewhere across the region.

It's an answer that we all want, but few seem to have a definitive answer for.

So, this is what we've done...

Tuesday we contacted, Congressman Chet Edwards, Senator Steve Ogden, and even the Attorney General's Office to try and get some answers. We've also left messages with some of the local gasoline distributors in the area.

This is an issue we're going to continue to pursue, because it's not only important to us, but also all of you.

Today's cheapest gas price in town is $3.49 at Cash Food Market, 200 MLK, Bryan, 979-833-9322.

Exxon at Wellborn and Rock Prairie raised their prices 40 cents per gallon - higher than the other stations nearby, including the other Exxon station on Rock Prairie.

cameron ranch market raised prices 50 cents per gallon higher than the highest stations in this area. also they do not post their prices where they can be seen from the street.

What slays me is these politicians have big press conferences stating that they won't tolerate gas price gouging, yet you don't hear of what they're going to do about it. Fine them $10,00.....???? I say, if there caught, have them have their business shut down for a solid 7 days, so they can take a week off counting the money that they ripped off the consumers. Nothing will come of this, you watch....they'll do nothing or slap them on the wrist

On 9/11/2008, the Shell station at 29th street and Barak Ln raised the price of gas from $3.49 to $3.55 and to $3.69 all in one day. 20 cents per gallon. Where is the justice? Continue on your investigation, we need it!

Posted by: annonymous Location: bryan on Sep 11, 2008 at 05:15 PM
One of the gas attendants told me that gas prices are going up approximatley a dollar friday 9-12 because of IKE.

Posted by: Ron Location: Bryan on Sep 4, 2008 at 08:58 PM
What happen with your investigation on high gas prices in BCS? I bought Exxon gas in Houston on 8/28/08 for $3.269 per gallon. Don't give up on the promise to investigate until you find the answer!

Posted by: bob Location: bryan on Sep 2, 2008 at 11:35 AM
What happened to your investigation on high oil prices in BCS. Oil dropped to $108 and the stations all went up. What gives

Posted by: Madison County on Aug 24, 2008 at 08:32 PM
Have you bought gas in Madisonville? It is worse. I was in Houston and it was 20 cents per gallon cheaper. It not just B/CS. The gas distributors here are price fixing here as well.

Jim Just stay in the to the right. My V-8 BMW only gets 15MPG. Put it sucks the wind out of 4-bangers.

Don't expect answers from the politicians. They're to busy not voting for off shore drilling.

Any updates since Tuesday?

Posted by: Jim Location: College Station on Aug 22, 2008 at 03:57 PM
It's not immediately obvious that people in B/CS are concerned about gasoline costs, based on the speeds they drive on the bypass.

"I have and 08 F-150 and put E-85 in when I go to Houston and my truck runs great on it! " I'm sure it does; E85 has an over 95 octane Number. But your MILEAGE sux compared to gasoline, unless you are doing a lot of towing, where the knock sensor has to dump tons of regular and even plus into the engine to keep it from clattering, and an equal amount of E85 because the energy per gallon is so low. Where the gasoline shows a huge improvement is when the engine can lean it out by advancing the spark as the load on the engine drops. Get an ODBII monitor and watch the MPG and spark advance numbers comparing the two types of fuel.

We took a vacation in July and drove 2,000 miles through Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois Arkansas and a large part of Texas. The most expensive gas we purchased was at an Exxon station in College Station. Something is wrong in B/CS.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Hearne on Aug 21, 2008 at 12:13 PM
I have to agree that some gas stations are ripping folks off. I got gas at the Chevron in Hearne a couple of weeks ago, put in $35.00 worth and like dd from college station said when I got in the car, it was just over a half a tank and it was also around 10 gallons worth. Can't afford to fill the tank up completely anymore. I have seen reports on shows like 20/20 before talking about how merchants can jack the pumps to where you pay more for gas and get less. Someone needs to put their foot down and stop this madness! Most of us work hard for our money and need it for something besides gas, like utilities and groceries!

Posted by: AL Location: College Station on Aug 21, 2008 at 09:31 AM
Does anyone know that gas lines run throught Austin Colony and through College Station on there way to Houston. Why don't they install a pick up station here in town and save the trucking expense. Brian, if we all bought gas out of town these rip-off stations would have to lower their prices. They ought to be ashamed of their selves when some families can't afford to eat but they still line their pockets with money that could feed children!

Posted by: Aggie Commuter Location: NW Houston on Aug 21, 2008 at 07:09 AM
Brian, look at my location. I already AM in Houston - I'm not advocating driving to Houston, I'm questioning why you are paying 10-20 cents more. Just pay more and don't question it - it's your pocketbook, not mine. Just remember that visitors to your area are spending their money elsewhere if they can.

"yes, was a coincidence that gas prices have dropped a great deal since the news 3 stories? I saw one station for 3.53 today next to apple tree at hwy21 AND texas ave." No, I guess that the KBTX story was SO POWERFUL that the Gas prices started dropping TWO WEEKS before it aired! They've been going down since August first.

Posted by: Brian Location: Bryan on Aug 20, 2008 at 10:49 PM
So you are going to drive to 290 & Barker/Cypress and fill up then drive back to B/CS. THAT OUGHT TO PAYOFF IN THE LONG RUN OR SHOULD I SAY DRIVE. DO THE MATH

Posted by: Woody Location: College Station on Aug 20, 2008 at 09:14 PM
Johnny that sounds like a job for the hundreds of cops that sit out there to do and not KBTX. I would rather here KBTX trying to save us money on gas than to report dumb little problems we have around town. Submit your tip to a local tabc or local law enforcement unit.

Posted by: Donna Location: Caldwell on Aug 20, 2008 at 09:09 PM
Gas was $3.41 in Austin today. What's up with that!

I drive to Brenham everyday. Today I filled up my tank there for $3.39 a gal at Wal-Mart.They weren't the only ones at that price. Whats wrong with BCS?

Posted by: Ole Ag Location: CS on Aug 20, 2008 at 06:30 PM
Ags, I got a story to tell ya. Went on a road trip today. Gas in North Zulch was 3.59/gal, then Normangee was 3.62/gal, then saw something amazing in Buffalo... an Interstate gas station had gas at 3.55/gal but the ole Shell station in town had it for 3.43/gal. Bad bull Ags when they are still charging 3.66/gal here in CS...

Posted by: Johnny Location: BCS on Aug 20, 2008 at 06:19 PM
IF KBTX LIKES TO DO UNDERCOVER STUFF. CHANNEL 3 NEEDS TO GO OUT ANY NIGHT TO NORTHGATE, AND SHOW HOW PEOPLE GET IN TO BUY DRINKS WHO ARE UNDER 21 WHOM USE FAKE I.D.'S. HECK,..GIVE ME A CAMERRA, AND I'LL DO IT. JUST PICK ANY BAR,..OUTSIDE, LITERALLY JUST FEET FROM THE DOOR ENTRANCE, YOU CAN HEAR THE MINORS COMPARING THEIR FAKE I.D.'S, AND ALTERED I.D.'S.

Posted by: Aggie Commuter Location: NW Houston on Aug 20, 2008 at 05:42 PM
"You know it all depends on where you look. For instance the Shell station next to the courthouse in Bryan is 3.56, " Sorry James, you are still getting screwed. I just gassed up at 290 and Barker Cypress in NW Harris County for $3.46 a gallon. I wont be getting gas in BCS unless its an emergency.

Posted by: Anon on Aug 20, 2008 at 03:48 PM
always buy gas close in to town, not out on a loop.(sams being an exception)

Posted by: local on Aug 20, 2008 at 03:48 PM
We recently traveled thru Oklahoma, Arkansas and MO and gas was cheaper in all 3 states than it is here in BCS. We are getting ripped off!!!!

boycott b/cs gas pumps

Posted by: dd Location: college station on Aug 20, 2008 at 02:28 PM
YES the gas in some CS stores are a rip off. Got gas at citgo on Sunday and the price was 3.66 gl. but when 40.00 was put in and got back in the car and realized that not only was it on half full but only got 10 gallons of gas. Anyone can do the mathon this one so be careful when getting gas there at the corner of Welborn and Southwest Prkwy.

Posted by: Green Location: BCS on Aug 20, 2008 at 01:57 PM
Thank you KBTX for giving this matter some much needed attention. The community deserves an answer as to why fuel prices are so much higher here. These money hungry oil/gas companies were probably living the good life and enjoying making record profits before prices started falling. They are probably trying to hang on to every last little penny that they can get. Meanwhile, families on the brink of being able to make ends meet, continue to make sacrifices to be able to work, feed and provide a shelter for their family. Where is the justice in this situation??

Posted by: Jeff Location: College Station on Aug 20, 2008 at 01:36 PM
I only live here because I have to. And I'm paying for it every day. Price gouged Gas, BS Propositions, Overzealous police officers, what more could I ask for??

Posted by: K.N. Location: Bryan on Aug 20, 2008 at 01:04 PM
I do not think it is the distributers cause if you don't know there is a gas pipe line that is in Hearne where alot of the area gas comes from. So you need to talk to the gas station owners.

Posted by: Cheaper gas Location: B/CS on Aug 20, 2008 at 12:27 PM
Just came from Dallas. Filled up there for $3.49 a gallon and in Riesel for $3.53 a gallon.

Posted by: James Location: Bryan on Aug 20, 2008 at 12:19 PM
You know it all depends on where you look. For instance the Shell station next to the courthouse in Bryan is 3.56, down the road at tobacco barn 3.57. You can always find gouging if you go out looking for it of course there are stations that are higher and if you look they are in the tourist corridor along University Drive where you are paying more for EVERYTHING not just gas even cigarettes are 20 to 50 cents higher there. Personally I am tired of all the complaining about gas prices, look they are dropping be happy and move on. And one thing most everyone glosses over is the different fule blends used across the country, certain areas MUST use certain additives in the fule and there are federal laws against transporting fule from one area with one formula to a different area with a different formula.

Posted by: Jake on Aug 20, 2008 at 12:08 PM
The ethanol issue is B.S. I have and 08 F-150 and put E-85 in when I go to Houston and my truck runs great on it! The lie that the gas station owner talked about the other night is B.S. to if you look at most of the gas pumps around town they all say may contain 10% ethanol, not MTBE. Maybe Krogers and H.E.B. should offer E-85 pumps around town like they do in other city's. There are enough cars and trucks that can run on E-85. Just look at the back of alot of cars and trucks they say FLEX FUEL! .50 cents a gallon cheaper is GOOD.

Posted by: Aggie Joe Location: College Station on Aug 20, 2008 at 11:51 AM
Because it is beside a college town. Ever body knows thing are higher cause of the aggies.

Posted by: John Location: Huntsville on Aug 20, 2008 at 11:50 AM
I went through your county and was amazed at how high your gas and diesel prices were for such a big area. In Huntsville, which is small county the gas prices are $3.44.9 and diesel is $3.95.9 per gallon. The million dollar question is Why are are so high in your gas prices?

Posted by: D Jones Location: College Station on Aug 20, 2008 at 11:15 AM
Thank you KBTX......I realized we were getting ripped off in Brazos County when I traveled to East Texas last weekend. The fuel prices were consistently 20 - 30 cents lower per gallon everywhere but here.

Posted by: joe on Aug 20, 2008 at 10:18 AM
b/cs reg avg $3.70 a gal. can we hear from surrounding towns. caldwell, hearne, navasota, maybe worth an outing to drive somewhere other than here

Posted by: Aggie Location: B/CS on Aug 20, 2008 at 09:52 AM
Would you all say you're digging deeper and tracking an economic storm?

Posted by: JOE Location: NAVASOTA on Aug 20, 2008 at 09:19 AM
WITH A FEW EXCEPTIONS GAS PRICES IN NAVASOTA ARE HIGHER THAN IN B/CS. I PAID $3.47 IN TOMBALL LAST SUNDAY. OIL COMPANIES, DISTRIBUTERS AND DEALERS ARE GOUGING AT WILL AND NOT EVEN TRYING TO COVER IT UP.

Posted by: jerry Location: Bryan on Aug 20, 2008 at 09:07 AM
In the past week I have traveled to D/FW, Houston and Brenham. I bought gas in Dallas for $3.49 last Thursday, $3.55 in Houston last Saturday and $3.46 in Brenham on Sunday. On Saturday and Sunday the cheapest I found in B/CS was $3.69 and there was one station on Harvey Mitchell at $3.81

Posted by: LW Location: Bryan on Aug 20, 2008 at 08:44 AM
You might contact the API (American Petroleum Institute)they set the standards for the Petroleunm Industry. They can answer most questions, or send you to the right persons. Also try A & M, they have some knowledgable people in this field.

Please don't stop digging until the facts and truth come out. I can't wait to leave this rip off town either. Everything is higher here than other parts of the state.

THANK YOU KBTX! WE NEED ANSWERS =)

Posted by: Frank Location: C/S on Aug 20, 2008 at 06:48 AM
Recently I traveled to thru 8 other states to South Dakota and Montana. I was pleased to see the price of Diesel in these other states. Even the tourist attractive Colorado Springs had cheaper diesel than the BCS area. Seems to be par for the course here though, it is inline with the raising of our water bills and proposed bonds that would raise our taxes again.

Posted by: Dennis Location: Anderson on Aug 20, 2008 at 05:45 AM
I bought diesel in Brenham at a Valero station for less than $4 a gallon. In my home town of Anderson it is $4.49 a gallon at the Shell station. So it is not only in B/CS that there are stingy gas station owners.

Posted by: Paul Location: Navasota on Aug 20, 2008 at 03:49 AM
Wierd. I was just up there today and the lowest price I saw was the Kroger on Texas Ave. in CS. The lowest in Navasota right now is 3.619. I have been seeing reports of 3.20 gas in Brazoria County. When you are talking about my truck with it's 35 gallon tank, that is a $15 difference in a fillup!

Posted by: Raven Location: College Station on Aug 20, 2008 at 12:38 AM
I am really impressed KBTX! I enjoy seeing groups make a stand to find out the real story. That's what news teams do! Way to go! I really think the fact that we are home to one of the largest colleges in Texas is a great reason for the high gas prices. The closer to campus, the higher the prices it seems. I came here from a little town about an hour north of B/CS, and at one time it was a great place to call home. Now, I can't wait to graduate college and leave!! Let us know what you find out KBTX!! :)

Posted by: Amy Location: College Station on Aug 19, 2008 at 11:34 PM
We just paid $3.58 down the road in Buffalo last week on our way to Louisiana. Upon reaching Louisiana, we discovered that the gas prices varied from $3.50-3.60 something.

Posted by: Woody Location: College Station on Aug 19, 2008 at 10:46 PM
We seem to get screwed in everything here in town. Red light cameras, recycling issues, high crime and now high gas prices. Is this the good life? I dont freaking think so. Pathetic stingy ole towns.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 19, 2008 at 10:16 PM
It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 19, 2008 at 10:01 PM
The fuel cost more in BCS because it all comes from the same pipe line in Hearne.

Posted by: jd Location: bcs on Aug 19, 2008 at 09:19 PM
Way to go KBTX !! Now the challenge is for the local news media to "dig deeper" and find the correct facts and honest truth from the distrubtors/jobbers and get this information out to the general public in the Bryan-College Station. Get tough KBTX.

Posted by: DW Location: college station on Aug 19, 2008 at 08:04 PM
Thanks for the info Maggie. Good job. We traveled to the east coast(South Carolina) and noticed the same thing. Reg. gas was as low as $3.42 gal. and deisel is down to $3.78 gal. in SC, GA & east AL. The closer we got to Texas, the higher the price increased. The state in which we live produces most of the gasoline in this country, yet we pay more for it. I express our thanks to KBTX for making this an issue, but you really don't think that the politicians and distributors you left messages with will give us an honest answer,,,,do you? Good luck. Have you noticed how many "OGDEN" oil wells there are around here. Steve and papa Emal Ogden are raking it in big time. We won't see any gas wars here.

I have purchased gas in Bryan as well as Houston and have no difference in my gas mileage.I have an 01 Ranger and still get 30 mpg....240,000 miles on it I add.

Posted by: glen Location: Wickson Valley on Aug 19, 2008 at 07:47 PM
Ethanol is sold every where. Should costless, make less MPG. Gasoline is cheeper in every diretion. Dont say it is the ethanol. I will buy out of town from now own. S.... the local stations!Even Sams and WalMart

Posted by: Tim Location: College Station on Aug 19, 2008 at 06:20 PM
Several gas sellers in BCS are selling Ethanol enriched Gas for a cheaper price. But buyer beware. Ethanol is a rip-off because it burns 30% quicker so you get significantly lower gas mileage. Stations that use ethanol are by law supposed to have a label actually on the pump. It's important that when comparing prices, you distinguish between pure gasoline and ethanol added gas. They are two different products.

i have recently been traveling a great deal to the medical center in houston and down to my former hometown of lake jackson. i was amazed at the difference in gasoline prices between there and here. i paid 3.36.9 down there. i hope this investigation finds out why such a big difference. in north houston they had a gas war and gasoline got down to 2.09 per gallon. something is wrong somewhere.
