Hurricane Gustav's move into the Gulf has attracted the eyes of local emergency officials.

While the track could change a lot in the next few days, Gustav has its eye on Louisiana's coast as of Thursday.

If that's the case, state leaders have told Brazos County they could very well be a shelter point for evacuees. Tyler, Dallas-Fort Worth and Marshall are among the other options being discussed.

The state has told local leaders as many as 50,000 Louisiana residents could be moved to Texas shelters, though no firm plans have been made, as the track of the storm could change often in the coming days.

A repeat of 2005 when Reed Arena was set up for evacuees of Katrina and Rita could happen. Local officials say Reed could be utilized as a special needs shelter.

If the storm continues towards Louisiana and Texas A&M is called upon for help, set up of the arena could begin this weekend.

Texas Task Force 1 continues to monitor the storm as well, with activation possible as Gustav approaches.

Sunday on my way from Ft. Worth, I was in Buffalo, Texas and seen alot of Lousianna cars. I understand they need a place to go. But, one thing where does Texas evacuate to? In Texas!! Thus they should evacuate in their state. People from Galveston head North, so with this is mind, why do we need to play host to them. I believe in helping people, but you know common sense shows you if you play with matches you get burned. Thus, a city drowned in water once, it will happen again. How can we fund a war, give stimulus checks, and help evacuees all in 2008. Something goes lacking..Which is healthcare.

TO:Elyssa Location: Raleigh,North Carolina on Aug 31, 2008 at 09:09 PM--How refreshing your post is after reading all the hate posts here. Its nice that you would offer your home to an evacuee from the storms, but I would be remiss if I didnt tell you during the last hurricane ( Katrina) there was a kind lady from Houston Texas that took in evacuees from the hurricane, and would you know how they repaid her kindness? They killed her. So please becareful. God bless

I want the names, addresses, and phone numbers of the bleeding-heart liberal city, county, and state officials who decided to bring the current evacuees to College Station. Didn't they learn their lesson from the Katrina people who caused College Station to have the highest crime rate in its history? Why do our elected "leaders" want people in College Station who rape, rob, murder, loot, collect welfare from the government and take all they can get from charitable organizations and us, the tax payers? Let's hold these officials accountable for their actions at election time.

I cannot believe that whoever the moron is running this board approves the rude messages that some people have left...not only are they rude, they are borderline slander! KBTX, shame on you!

We don't have too much to worry about regarding the current crop of evacuees. They drove here in cars. It is the ones that arrive by bus that you have to watch out far. It is my understanding that these we have are not even from New Orleans. Most are from SW Louisiana and the Beaumont area. Most of these people have jobs that they want to return to as soon as possible. They are just staying here because it is very difficult to find a hotel room anywhere in Texas. Don't worry about these people. It is the New Orleans trash you have to look out for.

I'm sorry for what happened, but i have to agree that some of the katrina victims abused the system. they expected handouts long after they had been here, instead of working like the rest of us do. i'm always willing to help those who are trying to help themselves. the system is broken. it helps those who sit at home all day.it gives free daycare to those who have no jobs, low rent, food stamps, and all this increases as you have more children out of wedlock. yet these people (our residents as well) afford name brand purses, clothes, shoes. they also have cell phones, rims on their cars, gold grills in their mouths etc. medicaid pays for their children to have braces; my private insurance pays 50% .i am tired of taking care of people who live like this. lets help the handicapped, and the elderly. the rest of you need to get off your lazy butts and work.

Go away Louisiana. We dont want you here!

As a whole, Louisiana people in general are good people that work for a living. New Orleans people, however are a different breed. Most New Orleans residents are thugs. As anyone from Louisiana will tell you, most New Orleans residents expect as free ride. The reason all the evacuees from New Orleans come here is the residents of Louisiana know how bad they are and they push them off on other states. Go buy you a gun and plenty of ammunition unless you have already satisfied that requirement. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANYTHING WHEN THEY GET HERE. They are like stray dogs. If you fed them, they will keep coming back for more. If you refuse to give them a handout, they will soon move on to greener pastures, like Houston.

With the projected path of Gustav what is being done here in the Brazos Valley to ensure our safety? What do we need to do as residents?

Posted by: Trevor on Aug 31, 2008 at 08:28 AM
This hurricane is all Bush's fault. If he had taxed us for carbon credits to offset Global Warming, this could have been prevented. The administration obviously hates Louisiana. Oh, and Iowa!

Posted by: whiskeytangofoxtrot Location: Bryan on Aug 30, 2008 at 11:59 PM
I've encountered both sides- evacuees wheo are just trying to make a fresh start in their new home (God bless 'em), and tose that jsut wanted to know where their bleeping FEMA check was. Woudln't it be nice,if we're called on to shelter evacuees again, that citizens- and especially campus staff- could find up to date info on the status of preparations so they knew what to expect?? Hellooooo...

Posted by: Crime Stopper Location: Gun range on Aug 30, 2008 at 06:08 PM
Just whose bright idea was it to welcome these thugs here. I want the names of the "state leaders" that told local officials Brazos county is going to be a shelter for these New Orleans HUD rats. We need to boot them out of office. Until then you need to buy plenty of ammunition for your firearms. You can bet these thugs are going to rape, rob and kill while they are here. As anyone that has ever been to New Orleans can tell you, that place was bad long before Katrina. I remember how dangerous it was in the 1950's when the rest of America was living like the Cleavers.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 30, 2008 at 03:52 PM
whoever thought this wouldnt become a hurricane.. you are stupid. hello its a cat 5. goes to show you you cant EVER predict anything. all of you people who are complaining about the evacuees need to GROW UP. talk about compassion for your fellow americans.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: cs on Aug 30, 2008 at 03:34 PM
I felt sorry for the what happen to those people, really i did. What is so crazy how the were trying taking the $1000 voucher and for their needs and get $1000 cash. Stealing gas out of cars, and robbing. Its like no one taught them to be grateful cause no one had to help them. You can't blame anyone for being mad for the experince the had while all of this was going on. I had people lieing, stealing, being rude, and saying they didn't even need this money (they just wanted to use cause it was free)in front of me. By the good grace of GOD I can only hope for a change that it wont be like that again. So you can have a caring heart, but what really hurts the most is some of them didn't appericate it. No one will be able to satisfy everyone. For example, the older woman who lived in houston who took in a family, they took over her house, and killed her. All cause she had a caring heart. I meet very nice people to. IT WAS SO GOOD SEEING A SMILING FACE DURING THAT TIME!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Joe on Aug 30, 2008 at 11:07 AM
It amazes me how rude some people can be. Sure, I understand the fustration of the host party, but to categorize people into a generic group and label them - that is really uncalled for and goes to show the ignorance of others.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 30, 2008 at 10:45 AM
To the people that are complaining I have a ? for you. Did you do anything for the Katrina Victims or did you sit at home and think about yourself. Yes you are wright there were bad people that came over to Texas but on the other hand most of the pepole were just like you and me. Also for your info I worked day and night out on the Highways and in the churches helping these people. I observed men crying because they did not know what happen to their homes. One women was crying because the vehicle that her two small children and husband were in was saparted on the Highway somewere and she did not know were they were or if they were safe. SO GET A LIFE

Posted by: Pamela Location: South Carolina on Aug 30, 2008 at 07:45 AM
Please, if you don't have compassion for the people, have compassion for the pets & other animals that will suffer from this hurricane. Please, offer to foster some animals if you can. Thanks.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 30, 2008 at 06:56 AM
Get ready for this. If you do not own a firearm you need to get one today. Brazos county could be invaded by thugs once again. Buy plenty of bottled water, canned goods, flashlights and batteries. It is very possible we could be without power if the storm strikes the Texas coast.

Posted by: T. Bryan Location: Bryan on Aug 29, 2008 at 10:56 PM
what the state of Texas ought to do is put ankle braclets and micro-chips on visitors so when the waters recede, we will be able to round up all the complaining people and send them home. When the people in the mid-west were flooded a few months back, they weren't complaing. Where were the rock stars? Why didn't they have fund raising concerts for these people? It's always about race. Oh yea, before they leave they need to fold up the tables, chairs, clean up all their trash, etc. before they hop on the bus and head home.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 29, 2008 at 07:02 PM
They don't need to come back. For those of you that didn't think the crime rate rose when the evacuees came to town, you better do some digging because you'll surely see you are WRONG. Anonymous Location: CS on Aug 29, 2008 at 08:18 AM I applaud your comment. 100% on mark.

Texas = HURRICANE VICTIM from Louisiana trash!

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 29, 2008 at 04:12 PM
Where is my compassion? I used it all on Katrina "victims". I have spent most of today doing the paperwork to evict a tenant that came here from New Orleans with Katrina. She was also evicted from her previous address but lied on her application to me about her eviction. In 10 months she has destroyed my property, has done many illegal activities from drug dealing to food stamp fraud at my property. She collects her government checks, lives off HUD and has local charities pay her utilities. Where is her compassion?? Our town is still suffering from Katrina. Send the next evacuees down the road.

Last time all those hurricane katrina people came here all we did was get a load of crap delivered to BCS. They robbed, stole, and begged. And I think I speak for everyone in this city...WE DONT LIKE THAT CRAP!!!...If we wanted it, we would move to Houston, or what used to be New Orleans. We only have room for one homeless man in this community and he walks up and down Harvey wearing some pretty awsome stuff (i.e. the sparking cowboy hat). Yeah yall know who im talking about. Its not about us not helping, we just dont want the baggage that follows them here.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 29, 2008 at 12:36 PM
Lets hope this time the people we help do not hold us up. Crime may be called the good life in bryan. Not so in CS.

Posted by: Bryan resident Location: Bryan on Aug 29, 2008 at 11:35 AM
As I read all of the comments, I can see both sides here. On one side we have people coming into our towns, cities, that are running from a hurricane, needing help. God has told us to help each other, and I can understand that people dont want to leave their homes, uncertain of what they will find when they return. BUT, I can also understand that the people in the host cities are subject to increased crime, etc...While we are glad to help, WE WOULD REALLY BE GLAD IF YOU WOULD BE ON YOUR BEST BEHAVIOUR AND HELP US HELP YOU BY NOT CONTRIBUTING TO OUR ALREADY HIGH CRIME LEVEL, I remember the last time, and crime stats were horrible, I know that people can act out when they are under stress, but believe me we were all under stress. I heard so many stories from volunteers that said so many of the evacuees were rude, please people this time, let the scene be different! Lets all weather this storm together, peacefully

Posted by: Anonymous Location: CS on Aug 29, 2008 at 10:41 AM
You people make me sick. Just because you think you have a good life you want to look down on others. What if a hurricane came through and wiped out our community? What if you had to go to another city where you don't know anybody? We had crime before the people from Louisana came here. Stop blaming people and stop judging others. Something could happen and you could be put in the same situation. You are no better than anyone else!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: CS on Aug 29, 2008 at 08:18 AM
It's hard to have COMPASSION for people who have no intention of helping themselves. When they maintain the mentality of sitting back and waiting for a check, it only makes me want to help even less. I'm all about helping hard-working individuals, but that's not what this group of people do. They want to take government money and food stamps, then complain that it's not enough...as if the government OWES them something for not listening and getting the heck out of dodge! So no...we don't need anymore slum in our community!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 28, 2008 at 10:42 PM
TO THE PERSON THAT WROTE THE COMMENT. "WE all PEOPLE! Where is your compassion?Do you have a heart? Do you really think they want to leave their home." I guess we can ship them all to Snook and let you deal with the crime increases and begging. No one told them to build their city 10 feet below sea level either!

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 28, 2008 at 10:36 PM
Great, now we can count on having to hear how no one helped them out and that no one is rebuilding their city. No one is giving us hand outs, no one is giving us checks, or a place to live! Boo hoo. It's funny that New Orleans whined and moaned when they didn't even get the full force of the hit. There were towns in Mississippi that was wiped off the map and you didn't hear anything from them. Goes to show you how people from New Orleans only care about drinking, partying, and getting checks from the government.

This is what happens when people don't do their research and lump what a tiny group does with the majority? Actually, most animal shelters across the gulf coast have a plan for evacuating their animals and a huge net work of other animal shelters with previous agreements to take them all over the U.S. This is a planned effort with communication that has already begun. When one shelter reaches there limit due to space the rest of the displaced animals move on to the next shelter in line for housing.

Here's a quote from the National Hurricane Center Website regarding Tropical Storm Gustav (note, Gustav is currently a TS, not a hurricane)as of 5:00 pm EDT today: "THE CHANCES OF HURRICANE-FORCE WINDS WITHIN THE NEXT FIVE DAYS ARE ESSENTIALLY THE SAME AT EACH INDIVIDUAL LOCATION FROM THE FLORIDA PANHANDLE COAST WESTWARD THROUGH THE ENTIRE COASTLINE OF LOUISIANA."

Posted by: Morgan Location: cs on Aug 28, 2008 at 04:57 PM
Oh no! Not again! Those people are horrible. Send them somewhere else. Anywhere else!

Posted by: Crime Location: College Station on Aug 28, 2008 at 04:25 PM
I thought the residents of College Station were tired of the high crime.... I guess its not going to go back down anytime soon.

Posted by: Heather Location: CS on Aug 28, 2008 at 03:23 PM
The shelters have started euthanizing animals. "A little-known fact is that when a hurricane threatens the gulf coast, almost all of the city and county run animal shelters euthanize all their animals, in theory to prevent their suffering. The thinking is that employees could be prevented from coming to work to care for the animals and they might have to go without food and water for an unknown period of time, or the building could sustain damage and the animals be hurt or killed in the process." Halfway Home Rescue Team. People should consider contacting and fostering or adopting some of these animals.

We will have a run on the gun stores larger thea the last time. We needed to buy ammo early.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 28, 2008 at 01:45 PM
We are still locking up the last group. They need to riot in place and stay out of BCS. The new jail is full. The jail was made larger than needed and it is still full. Chicago IL would make a nice place for them stay this time. Maybe San Francisco CA.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 28, 2008 at 01:44 PM
Someone needs to get their stories strait. Last night I was reading on KHOU the the officials in La. were planning on sending their people further upstate in La., not to Texas this time. That the reason they came last time was because the storm had already hit and there were people being rescued from the floods. In this case they learned their lesson last time and are making plans early on this time.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 28, 2008 at 01:18 PM
"I hope if they have to evacuate they can bring pets this time.." They said on the Weather Channel that SPCA has already started clearing their shelters.
