Educators and parents in DeSoto are considering a rule that would prohibit students who fail classes from attending extracurricular activities as spectators.
The "no-pass, no-attend" rule would go beyond the state's existing no-pass, no-play rule, which prohibits a student who fails a class from participating in extracurricular activities.
Some supporters of the proposal in DeSoto say the policy would spur students to be more diligent in their studies.
DeSoto Independent School District Superintendent Alton Frailey says he will gauge staff and community feedback before recommending the policy for the next school year. He says the district could administer the policy with electronic identification cards, which would carry academic information.
Most students in the city 15 miles south of Dallas are opposed to the idea.
