A grass fire on Texas A&M property had firefighters from the Twin Cities and the county working to curb fast-moving flames.

In all, about two dozen acres of property were burned over the course of an hour-and-a-half Monday. The fire started in a field off of F&B Road near Agronomy Road.

No structures were damaged, though a dairy nearby was evacuated as the fire spread. Firefighters were able to stop the flames before they spread to the dairy.

Though firefighters were on top of things, the blaze was a fast-mover fed by tall, dry grass in both an open field and a forested area where it eventually spread. Some trees had to be cut down as a result of the damage and to prevent further spread.

No firefighters were injured during the event, which is becoming all too common so far this year. College Station had the lead in battling the flames. The particular shift that handled this fire has handled four in the past two weeks. The shift works 24 hours on, then 48 hours off, meaning in those two weeks, they've been on duty for some five days. That's four fires in five days of work.

Since the beginning of the year, College Station officials say they've handled around 10 grass fires. In comparision, they worked just four fires at this point last year.

Drought conditions are beginning to prevail in the region, but no burn bans are in effect in the Brazos Valley. Burning without a permit on campus or city property is illegal.

The cause of Monday's fire is under invesigation. It appears to have started near a construction and storage facility.
