NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The city of Nacogdoches is looking to
take on an education role with a city-run class called Nacogdoches
101.
The free civics lesson would shed light on city departments, the
budget process, volunteerism and the opportunities citizens have to
get involved.
If city commissioners approve the free program at their regular
meeting Tuesday night, the classes could start as soon as January.
The program is modeled on the the Citizens Police Academy. In
that program, residents got a look at law enforcement. City Manager Jim Jeffers tells The Daily Sentinel that completion of the class might someday be a prerequisite for serving on city boards. It wouldn't, however, be required for elected officials.
