It jumped to trees and left thick smoke in the neighborhood, but a Bryan family was safe Thursday night, after a fire severely damaged their home.
Just before 6p.m., firefighters were called to the 4200 block of Milam Street. Firefighters said when they arrived, the smoke was so thick they could barely make out the road.
Raymond and Denise Jae and their three kids made it out of the home safely, as did two pet snakes. Firefighters believe the fire started in the back of the house, then spread to the attic.
Because of the extreme temperatures, 35 emergency responders were on scene.
"The temperatures inside the building were probably somewhere close to 1500 degrees inside the attic area and below the fire its 700-800 degrees. They're wearing their thermal protections which is like wearing your winter coat out on a hot summer day and jogging," said Chief Mike Donaho of the Bryan Fire Department.
No firefighters suffered heat or smoke side effects.
The Rae family is staying with relatives tonight. The Red Cross will provide them a voucher to stay in a hotel friday through sunday night.
