The punishment phase in the Gregg Baird child pornography trial will come to a close Thursday afternoon when Judge Bryan hands down his decision.

Baird, a former local financial executive is facing up to 100 years in prison and took the stand today, as his own character witness.

During court, Baird said his collection of child pornography makes him feel "horrible" and "ashamed." The defense called several witnesses to the stand, including his mom and dad, after the State of Texas rested its case.

Authorities say 65,000 pictures and videos of child porn were found in his possession, some featuring boys as young as six years old. The collection was compiled over about a span of five years.

Baird also claims he was raped while in boy scouts, when he was 12, by two older scouts. He also admits to being HIV positive.

The investigator in charge of the case testified that in his years of service, he had never seen that many images before, or images as graphic as the ones Baird downloaded. The majority appear to have been downloaded in large groups and from file-sharing websites. Images saved on hard drives were stored in locations that normally wouldn't be used to store files. The investigator believed Baird was trying to hide the images.

Gregg Baird was arrested and plead guilty to ten counts of possessing child pornography, and admitted guilt to 90 other counts last May. The judge can take those charges into account when determining punishment.

The 39 year-old used to work for Aggieland Credit Union as a vice president and was majorly involved in The Boy Scouts of America.

Baird was not featured in any of the inappropriate acts with children, but the images did show naked boys involved in graphic sexual acts with adults.

Baird was originally charged with 100 counts of possession of child pornography.

After someone staying at his home found the explicit images on his computer, authorities issued a warrant for his arrest in May 2009. He was arrested in west Texas, where police believe he fled after the warrant was issued.

The judge could sentence Baird to a maximum of 100 years in prison. Each of the ten counts carries a possible ten year sentence, or he could get probation.

I'm sorry but to be "understanding" when a sick pervert violates children in this way is just not possible. No matter what happened to this man nearly 30 years ago, it doesn't change the fact that he did this. It doesn't excuse him from his actions. Get with the program people, feeling 'sorry' for a dirt bag that gets hot looking at children rather than women because he was assaulted once is the reason these people don't get the punishment they deserve. They get locked up for a little while and set free as long as they register as sex offenders. He is an adult and knows right from wrong. If they were your children in the photos there would be no sympathy. I am with the parents of these innocent children. How dare this awful man try to gain our sympathy. These people need to be stopped, not helped and felt sorry for. I guess it's a sign of the times when you can make up an excuse for the of foulest crimes. You should all be enraged not feeling sorry for him.
