COLLEGE STATION - The question of who will replace Heisman trophy winner Johnny Manziel at quarterback is still unanswered. But we now know it will not be senior quarterback Matt Joeckel.

Texas A&M announced on Wednesday that Joeckel has decided to transfer to another school.

"Matt is a great Aggie and he has decided to transfer," Texas A&M head football coach Kevin Sumlin said. "We wish him all the best."

Joeckel earned his undergraduate degree from the Mays Business School at Texas A&M in December.

"I have loved my four and a half years at Texas A&M," Joeckel said. "I am glad I had the opportunity to play for Coach Sumlin, Coach (Jake) Spavital and the rest of the coaches. I am proud to have my degree from the Mays Business School and I'll always consider myself a member of the Aggie family."

Joeckel played in five games last season, throwing for 293 yard and two touchdowns. He started the season opener against Rice in place of Manziel, who was suspended for the first half. He completed 14-of-19 passes for 190 yards and a 71-yard touchdown to Ricky Seals-Jones. Joeckel also appeared in five games as a sophomore, completing 5-of-11 passes for 42 yards. He did not see any action his red shirt freshman season.

Joeckel was expected to compete for the starting quarterback job this fall. The other candidates are sophomore Kenny Hill, who is suspended after his arrest last month for public intoxication, and true freshman Kyle Allen, a five-star recruit from Scottsdale, Arizona.

Joeckel’s twin brother, Luke, was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the second overall pick of last year’s NFL Draft.
