Blood Center of Brazos Valley In Critical Need of Donations

COLLEGE STATION Giving the gift of life is a selfless act that doesn't take much time, but not a lot of people in Bryan-College Station are donating blood.

"We try to keep a three day supply on the shelves, but now we are down to a one day supply," said Jeff Doneghue, the Blood Center of Brazos Valley operations manager.

He said they usually get up to 20 donors a day, but that's not the case right now. Some days, they don't get any donors. Doneghue said donations have dropped during this unseasonably cold winter - especially the last few weeks because people don't feel safe driving in icy conditions.

"Platelets are only good for five days, so that's why we need a constant flow of donors to come in," Doneghue said.

The center barely has enough donations to supply the local hospitals and they are urging residents to donate.

"We get our daily donations in, process them, label them and basically have to ship them out, so our on hand inventory is just not there," he said.

Stephanie Payne is a regular donor.

"I think that we all have our responsibility to help each other out," Payne said.

She donates every few weeks.

"It's something I can do pretty easily," she said. "I sit here with my laptop and get work done. It makes me feel good that I am helping someone else out."

Payne hopes other residents will step up and help those who are in desperate need of blood.

If you would like to donate blood, you can contact the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center.
