BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) A Southeast Texas man has been charged with killing a longtime friend after the pair apparently argued while sharing a home.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office on Thursday announced 35-year-old Matthew Earl Smith of Hamshire was being held on a murder charge. Bond was $1 million for Smith, who was arrested Wednesday afternoon following the shooting in Fannett (fah-NET').
Deputies received a call from a person who was flagged down by Smith about a shooting. The body of 51-year-old Cole Dupuy (doo-PWEE') was found outside a nearby home.
Deputy Rod Carroll says a weapon was recovered. Details weren't released.
Carroll says Smith was renting a room from the victim. Authorities are trying to determine what sparked the falling-out between the men.
Officials had no information on a lawyer for Smith.
