COLLEGE STATION – The month long standoff between Café Eccell and a Houston based developer is over.
The owners of Café Eccell tell News 3 they have “amicably resolved” the dispute and will move out of the building at Church Avenue and Wellborn next month.
Asset Plus bought the property from the City of College Station on January 14 for nearly $3 million and plans to build a mid-rise, multifamily housing development. Café Eccell has been operating without a lease since then, but has refused to move.
Two weeks ago, a Justice of the peace ruled Café Eccell did not have the right to stay in the building. The owners posted a $20,000 bond to appeal the case to a Brazos County court. It also prevented Asset Plus from obtaining an eviction notice.
Café Eccell has been located and Church and Wellborn for more than 25 years. Owners Costa and Andreas Dallis said Asset Plus originally agreed to keep the restaurant open and provide parking. But the deal turned south when Asset Plus said they never promised parking.
Friday afternoon, the Dallis’ emailed News 3 this statement: "Cafe Eccell and Asset Plus have amicably resolved this dispute. Cafe Eccell will stay in its current location until mid-March 2014. At that time, Asset Plus will begin its construction on the new development at that location."
Café Eccell’s last day in the current location is March 8. The following Monday, the restaurant will donate any unused food items to the Brazos Valley Food Bank.
The Dallis’ told News 3 they do plan to reopen, but do not have a new location or timeline yet.
